How competitive is dental marketing in San Diego?
Less than most big metros, at least on Google reviews. In our 2026 benchmark of 123 San Diego dental practices, the median has 250 Google reviews, against 319.5 nationally, 16th of 20 metros. A general-dentistry click is a planning estimate of $9.50, 12th of 20 metros and the cheapest of California's three big metros.
- San Diego dental review profiles are thinner than in 15 of the other 19 metros; 22.8% of practices have 500+ reviews (national 30.9%).
- 14.6% of San Diego dental practices have fewer than 50 reviews, the 3rd-highest share of 20 metros.
- Planning estimates per click: $9.50 general, $17.20 orthodontics, $30.60 cosmetic; well below Los Angeles and San Francisco.
- Outside dentistry, San Diego splits: med spas are the deepest of 19 metros, plastic surgery and dermatology the thinnest of 20.

“They were able to get all my ideas and work with me over a period of three to four months and create this amazing website. It's super customized, very modern, and it incorporates all the elements that I had wanted — the patient portal, nice pictures, a very interactive website, patient reviews. I would highly recommend their company to anyone who wants to make an excellent website.”
San Diego dental profiles are thinner than most
On Google Maps, competition shows up as review history. San Diego dental practices have less of it than practices in most metros we measured: a median of 250 reviews, 16th of 20, against 408 in Houston and 441 in New York. Los Angeles (240) and San Francisco (231) are thinner still. The spread across review bands shows where the difference lies.
| Metro | Median reviews | Under 50 | 500+ | Weekend hours | Avg rating | n |

The top of the field is less crowded: 22.8% of San Diego dental practices have 500 or more reviews, against 30.9% nationally. The bottom is busier: 14.6% have fewer than 50, the 3rd-highest share of 20 metros. That bottom group is where a practice with a working review routine can move up first.
This is a California pattern. All three California metros in our sample sit among the five thinnest dental markets of 20. As plain arithmetic, a practice adding 10 reviews a month would reach the San Diego median in about 25 months and the national median in about 32, before counting competitors' own new reviews.
Mid-table clicks, and the cheapest in California
Our 2026 planning estimates put a San Diego general-dentistry click at about $9.50, orthodontics at $17.20 and cosmetic dentistry at $30.60. That is 12th of 20 metros, and well below Los Angeles ($16.90) and San Francisco ($22.50).
To make that concrete, a $3,000 monthly budget would buy roughly 315 general-dentistry clicks at the San Diego estimate, 177 at the Los Angeles one and 133 at the San Francisco one. That is our arithmetic on planning estimates, not a forecast of results. Cosmetic work is the exception: at about $30.60 a click, a veneer or implant campaign needs tight targeting and a clear way to measure booked consultations.
Weekend hours: San Diego is not Los Angeles
The table above holds one more contrast. In Los Angeles, 48.4% of dental practices list a weekend day on Google; in San Diego, 18.7%, below the national 25.5%. Ratings are similar everywhere (San Diego averages 4.76 stars), so they rarely decide who gets the call. Opening hours can. A San Diego practice that offers Saturday appointments, and keeps those hours accurate on its profile, is visible to patients searching on the weekend when most local peers show as closed.
San Diego's other specialties pull in opposite directions
San Diego ranks 16th of 20 metros on our overall review-depth index (0.78), but the average hides extremes. San Diego med spas have a median of 289.5 reviews, the deepest of 19 metros (a small group of 20), and medical weight loss clinics rank 3rd of 20. Plastic surgery and dermatology go the other way: medians of 20 and 43 reviews, both the thinnest of 20 metros, and plastic surgery practices average 4.4 stars, the lowest of 20 metros.
For a dental practice that also offers cosmetic or aesthetic treatments, this matters. The patients searching for injectables in San Diego see a crowded field of well-reviewed med spas; the ones searching for a cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist see a much thinner one.
What this means for your practice
- Make reviews the first lever. San Diego dental profiles are thinner than most, so a steady monthly review routine pays off sooner here.
- Benchmark against your neighborhood, not the county; La Jolla and Chula Vista are different contests.
- Use paid search for general dentistry, where San Diego clicks cost well under Los Angeles or San Francisco.
- Keep cosmetic ads narrow and judge them by booked consultations, not clicks.
- Show weekend hours if you offer them. 18.7% of San Diego dental practices list a weekend day, against 25.5% nationally.

Click costs: planning estimates from our US Dental Marketing Benchmark 2026, January to August 2026. The clicks-per-budget and months-to-median figures are our own arithmetic.
- Small sample: the San Diego med spa group is 20 practices; treat that row as directional.
- Review counts measure visibility, not quality of care. A metro median hides big neighborhood differences across San Diego County.
- Cost figures are planning estimates, not quotes or guarantees.

Common questions
Is San Diego a competitive market for dental marketing?
Less than most large metros on Google reviews. In our 2026 benchmark, the median San Diego dental practice has 250 reviews against 319.5 nationally, 16th of 20 metros. Paid search is mid-priced, with a general-dentistry click estimated at $9.50.
How many Google reviews does a San Diego dentist need?
To match the local median, about 250, based on 123 San Diego dental practices in our September 2026 study. 22.8% have 500 or more and 14.6% have fewer than 50. Where you need to be depends on the practices nearest you, not the whole metro.
How much do Google Ads cost for San Diego dentists?
Our 2026 planning estimates are about $9.50 per click for general dentistry, $17.20 for orthodontics and $30.60 for cosmetic dentistry, against $16.90 and $22.50 for general dentistry in Los Angeles and San Francisco. These are planning ranges, not quotes.
Is San Diego dental marketing easier than Los Angeles?
On cost, yes: our planning estimate for a general-dentistry click is $9.50 in San Diego and $16.90 in Los Angeles. On reviews the two are close, with medians of 250 and 240. Both sit below the national median of 319.5.
Should San Diego dentists focus on SEO or Google Ads?
Usually SEO and reviews first, with ads for high-value services. Review profiles are thinner than in most metros, so a steady review routine moves a practice up faster than in, say, Houston or New York, while cosmetic and orthodontic clicks cost enough to keep ads targeted.
