Ketamine clinic marketing: how to grow when the ad platforms, regulators and patients all need extra care

Ketamine clinics sit where three sensitive areas meet: mental health, a controlled substance and treatment that is often off-label. That rules out much of the marketing playbook other clinics use. What works is slower and steadier: referral relationships, careful education content, local search and a screening process that protects patients and the practice.

Guide for US practice owners · Published September 27, 2026

TL;DR
  • Most ketamine patients arrive through referrals and research, not impulse. Build relationships with psychiatrists, therapists and primary care physicians first.
  • Expect ad restrictions. Google and Meta treat prescription drug terms and mental health targeting cautiously. Plan for certification requirements and disapprovals.
  • Never imply FDA approval you don't have. IV ketamine for depression is off-label; the FDA-approved product for treatment-resistant depression is an esketamine nasal spray given under a restricted program.
  • Education content wins search: "what does a ketamine infusion feel like", "who is a candidate", "ketamine vs esketamine".
  • Every page needs crisis information (988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) and a screening step before booking.
  • Every practice welcome — retainers from $499/mo, Goals-Driven engagements, Performance-Linked Payout Models available.

“They were able to get all my ideas and work with me over a period of three to four months and create this amazing website. It's super customized, very modern, and it incorporates all the elements that I had wanted — the patient portal, nice pictures, a very interactive website, patient reviews. I would highly recommend their company to anyone who wants to make an excellent website.”

The landscape

Why ketamine clinic marketing is different

Short answer: ketamine clinics market a mental health treatment that involves a controlled substance and is often used off-label. Ad platforms restrict it, regulators watch its claims, and patients are often vulnerable. Growth comes from trust and referrals more than from ads.

Three facts shape every decision:

  • Ketamine is a Schedule III controlled substance. It is FDA-approved as an anesthetic. Using IV ketamine for depression, PTSD, anxiety or chronic pain is off-label, even where clinical research supports it.
  • Esketamine is different. An esketamine nasal spray is FDA-approved for treatment-resistant depression and for depressive symptoms in adults with major depressive disorder with suicidal thoughts or actions. It is given in certified healthcare settings under a risk management program with monitoring after each dose. If you offer it, you can describe that approval accurately; if you only offer IV ketamine, you cannot borrow it.
  • Your audience includes people in crisis. Marketing that pressures, overpromises or targets distress is unethical, and it is also what regulators and ad platforms act against.

The FDA has also warned consumers about compounded ketamine products prescribed through telehealth for use at home without monitoring. If your clinic provides in-office, monitored treatment, that difference is worth explaining calmly and factually, without scaremongering.

Claims

What you can and can't say

Short answer: describe what you offer, who it may help, how it is delivered and what the evidence says, with limits. Avoid cure language, guarantees, success rates you can't document and any implication of FDA approval for off-label use.

Safer phrasing

  • "Ketamine infusion therapy, provided off-label under medical supervision."
  • "Some patients with treatment-resistant depression experience improvement; results vary."
  • "Every patient is screened by our medical team before treatment."
  • "Continuous monitoring during and after each session."

Phrasing to avoid

  • "FDA-approved ketamine treatment for depression" (unless you mean the approved esketamine product and offer it).
  • "Cure your depression in six sessions."
  • "90% success rate" without published, documented data behind it.
  • "Safe, with no side effects."

The FTC expects health claims to be truthful and supported by competent and reliable scientific evidence. Its rules on reviews and testimonials also apply: no fake or incentivised reviews presented as independent, and testimonials must reflect typical experience or say clearly that results vary. State medical boards add their own advertising rules; our state board guide covers the common ones.

Referrals

Referral partnerships: the main growth channel

Short answer: psychiatrists, therapists and primary care physicians see the patients who have tried two or more antidepressants without enough relief. Make it easy and safe for them to refer, and keep them informed.

  1. Build a referring-clinician page. Explain your eligibility criteria, screening process, monitoring protocol, how you coordinate with the patient's existing care team and how referrers receive updates (with the patient's consent).
  2. Offer a simple referral path. A secure referral form or fax/e-referral option, a named contact and a promise on response time.
  3. Share outcomes responsibly. Referring clinicians want to know how their patients are doing. Structured updates, with consent, build trust faster than any brochure.
  4. Educate, don't sell. Short lunch-and-learn sessions or grand-rounds style talks on the evidence, patient selection and safety work better than promotional visits.
  5. Keep it compliant. Federal anti-kickback and state fee-splitting rules restrict paying for referrals. Don't offer referral fees or gifts tied to referrals; have counsel review any arrangement.
Search

Local search and education content

Short answer: people research ketamine treatment for weeks before contacting a clinic. Answer their questions honestly and completely, and make sure you appear when they search locally.

Google Business Profile

  • Choose the most accurate primary category for your clinic and list the services you actually provide.
  • Add real photos of treatment rooms, the monitoring setup and the team. People want to see where they will be.
  • Ask for reviews in a way that protects privacy: never reply to a review in a way that confirms someone is a patient.

Education pages that earn search traffic and AI citations

  • What does a ketamine infusion feel like, and what happens during a session?
  • Who is a candidate, and who should not have ketamine treatment?
  • Ketamine vs esketamine: what's the difference?
  • How many sessions are usually recommended, and what happens after the initial series?
  • Cost, payment options and what insurance may or may not cover.
  • Ketamine for PTSD, anxiety and chronic pain: what the evidence does and doesn't show.

Start each page with a direct two- or three-sentence answer, then the detail. AI search tools and Google's AI Overviews favour pages that answer the question clearly near the top. Have each page reviewed by your medical director and show the reviewer's name and date.

Paid media

Google and Meta ads: what to expect

Short answer: paid ads are possible but restricted. Plan for certification requirements, keyword limits and personal-health targeting rules, and don't make ads your only channel.

  • Google: ads and keywords using prescription drug terms are restricted, and US advertisers generally need certification (Google works with LegitScript) to promote prescription drugs. Many clinics bid on service and condition-neutral phrases and expect some disapprovals during review. See our Google Ads healthcare policy guide.
  • Meta: prescription drug advertising requires certification and Meta's authorisation, and ad copy may not imply knowledge of someone's health condition. "Are you depressed?" will be rejected; "Learn about treatment options at our clinic" may not be. Our Meta healthcare restrictions guide has examples.
  • Landing pages: keep the same careful claims, show the screening step and include crisis resources.
Privacy and safety

HIPAA, tracking and crisis information

Short answer: mental health is among the most sensitive categories of health information. Keep tracking technology off intake and appointment pages unless it is covered by a business associate agreement, and show crisis resources on every page.

  • Tracking pixels. HHS has warned that tracking technologies on healthcare websites can disclose protected health information. For a ketamine clinic, even a page visit can suggest a mental health condition. Use a HIPAA-conscious analytics setup; our tracking guide explains the options.
  • Crisis resources. Show "If you are in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911" in the footer and on forms. State plainly that the clinic does not provide emergency care.
  • Text and email follow-up. Get written consent before marketing texts (TCPA) and keep messages free of clinical detail. See our TCPA guide.
Measurement

What to measure

Track screening forms started and completed, consultations booked, the share of consultations that proceed to treatment, completion of the initial series, referral sources (by referring clinician where the patient consents) and patient-reported outcomes you already collect clinically. If many people start the screening form but few finish, simplify it. If consultations don't convert, look at how clearly cost and next steps are explained.

FAQ

Common questions

How do ketamine clinics get new patients?

Mainly through referrals from psychiatrists, therapists and primary care physicians, and through patients researching treatment options online. A clinic that builds referral relationships, publishes clear education content, ranks locally for "ketamine clinic near me" and makes the screening process easy usually outperforms one that relies on paid ads, because ad platforms restrict much of this category.

Can a ketamine clinic run Google Ads?

Often yes, but with limits. Google restricts ads and keywords that use prescription drug names, and in the United States it generally requires certification for advertisers promoting prescription drugs or related services. Many clinics advertise the service and condition-neutral terms instead, such as "treatment-resistant depression options", and expect some disapprovals. Check the current Google Ads healthcare and medicines policy before launching.

Can we say ketamine is FDA-approved for depression?

Not for IV ketamine. Ketamine is FDA-approved as an anesthetic; its use for depression by infusion is off-label. The FDA-approved treatment in this area is an esketamine nasal spray for treatment-resistant depression, given in certified settings under a risk management program. Your marketing should describe exactly what you offer and avoid implying approval, cure or guaranteed results.

What should a ketamine clinic website include?

Plain-English explanations of the treatment, who is and is not a candidate, what a session involves, safety monitoring, costs and payment options, the medical team's credentials, a screening or intake form, crisis resources such as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, and a clear way for referring clinicians to contact you.

Is Meta advertising allowed for ketamine clinics?

Meta requires advertisers promoting prescription drugs to be certified and authorised, and it does not allow ads that imply knowledge of a person's health condition, such as "Are you struggling with depression?". Clinics that use Meta usually promote education content, events or the clinic brand with carefully worded, non-personal copy.
