“They were able to get all my ideas and work with me over a period of three to four months and create this amazing website. It's super customized, very modern, and it incorporates all the elements that I had wanted — the patient portal, nice pictures, a very interactive website, patient reviews. I would highly recommend their company to anyone who wants to make an excellent website.”
Why we built a Virginia practice
We did not pick Virginia from a map. Our work here grew from one relationship: the Opulent group, which runs dental and pediatric practices across the New River Valley and Roanoke. As that work expanded from one practice to four, we learned how Virginia patients search, which towns behave as their own markets, and where local practices leave demand on the table.
Virginia is also an unusually varied state for healthcare marketing. In one state you have a college-town market built around Virginia Tech, a regional hub in Roanoke, the military families of Hampton Roads, the state capital's fast-growing suburbs, and Northern Virginia, where patients compare practices across three jurisdictions. A campaign that works in Arlington will not work in Christiansburg without changes, and we plan for that.
What we have learned working here
- Small towns are real search markets. In the New River Valley, patients search "dentist Shawsville" or "pediatrician Christiansburg" as often as they search the bigger town nearby. Each town needs its own clear page and a Business Profile that reflects it.
- Medicaid searches are underserved. Many Virginia dental practices do not say clearly whether they accept Medicaid. Families who have it search very specifically, and practices that answer clearly get found.
- Education content does local work. A clear explanation of dental sealants or a first dental visit earns trust with local parents and, done well, competes nationally too.
- Group practices need structure. Several locations under one brand should strengthen each other, not compete for the same searches. We give each location its own specialty, town and profile.
Our four Virginia clients
All four are part of the Opulent group, which works with us on two service lines: SEO and Google Business Profile management. Each case study explains the practice, what it needed and what we do. We publish qualitative descriptions here; the case studies go into the work in more detail.

Five Virginia markets, five different search patterns
Southwest Virginia: Roanoke and the New River Valley
Roanoke is the largest city in Southwest Virginia and the centre of the Roanoke Valley. Patients come into the city from Salem, Vinton, Botetourt County and beyond, but they also search by their own town. An hour's drive away, the New River Valley combines Blacksburg, a college town built around Virginia Tech, with Christiansburg, the Montgomery County seat, and smaller towns such as Radford and Shawsville. Every academic year brings new families choosing doctors and dentists from scratch. This is where all four of our Virginia clients practise.
Hampton Roads: Virginia Beach and Norfolk
Virginia Beach is the most populous city in the state, and Norfolk is home to Naval Station Norfolk. Navy families arrive on orders and pick new providers quickly, often within days. Clear insurance information (including TRICARE, where you accept it), accurate hours and fast booking decide who gets the appointment. Residents also cross city lines every day, so a practice in Chesapeake competes with practices in Norfolk and Virginia Beach.
Central Virginia: Richmond
Richmond's growth is mostly in the suburban counties, Henrico and Chesterfield. A family in Midlothian and a family in Glen Allen see different local results, and each location needs its own presence rather than a single "Richmond" page.
Northern Virginia: Arlington
Arlington sits next to Washington, DC, with a large federal, military and contractor workforce that turns over often. Patients here compare practices across Virginia, DC and Maryland, so it matters that your pages make clear you are licensed and located in Virginia. Proximity to Metro stops and flexible hours are common search filters.
The Piedmont and the Blue Ridge: Charlottesville and Lynchburg
Charlottesville is home to the University of Virginia and its academic medical centre, so independent practices compete on access and personal care rather than size. Lynchburg is the hub of Central Virginia, home to Liberty University and the University of Lynchburg, and draws patients from Forest, Bedford and Amherst. In both, many patients search by suburb or county rather than by city name.

What we do for every Virginia practice
- Google Business Profile management for every location: accurate hours, insurance, services and photos, weekly posts, and a review process your front desk can run.
- Local SEO: location and service pages built around the searches new patients make in your towns, structured so Google and AI assistants can cite your practice.
- Practice websites: fast, accessible sites with online booking and visible reviews, built to WCAG 2.2 AA.
- Paid search and Meta: campaigns for new-patient and emergency searches, measured by booked appointments rather than clicks.
- Reviews and reputation: steady, compliant review requests and responses that never confirm a patient relationship.
- Call and booking tracking: every call, form and booking tied to its source and reported live on Ichelon Agency OS.
Virginia city pages by specialty
Each city page covers the local market, the towns around it, the searches patients make, and the Virginia rules that apply.
The Virginia rules every campaign is checked against
Healthcare advertising in Virginia sits under state licensing boards, a state privacy law and the same federal rules that apply everywhere in the US. We review claims, credentials, reviews, testimonials and tracking against them before anything goes live.
| Area | What applies in Virginia |
|---|---|
| Physicians | The Virginia Board of Medicine, part of the Virginia Department of Health Professions: truthful advertising, credentials, specialty and board-certification claims, and testimonials. |
| Dentists | The Virginia Board of Dentistry, also within the Department of Health Professions: specialty claims, fees and offers, and patient images. |
| State privacy law | The Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act. HIPAA covered entities and business associates are exempt, but it can reach vendors and non-HIPAA health data. |
| Coverage programs | Medicaid and FAMIS for children and families. If you accept them, make it easy to find; if you don't, say so clearly. |
| Consumer protection | The Virginia Consumer Protection Act, enforced by the Attorney General, alongside the FTC Act at federal level. |
| Patient privacy | HIPAA, including HHS guidance on tracking technologies: no patient information to ad or analytics platforms. |
| Calls, texts, email | TCPA consent for reminders and follow-up; CAN-SPAM for email; opt-outs honoured everywhere. |
| Reviews | FTC endorsement guides: no incentivised or fake reviews, and responses that never confirm a patient relationship. |
| Accessibility | ADA, built to WCAG 2.2 AA. |

Healthcare marketing in Virginia: common questions
Do you have healthcare clients in Virginia?
Yes. Four of our live US clients are in Virginia: Opulent Dental in Christiansburg, Opulent Pediatrics and Opulent Pediatric Dentistry in Blacksburg, and Mill Mountain Dentistry by Opulent Dental in Roanoke. The Opulent group works with us on SEO and Google Business Profile management across its practices. Each has a case study on our site.
How much does healthcare marketing cost for a Virginia practice?
Every practice is welcome. Ichelon Consulting US retainers start from $499/mo for a website SEO base package. Larger programmes covering Google Business Profile, paid search, Meta and content are scoped jointly after a benchmarking call, as Goals-Driven engagements, with Performance-Linked Payout Models available. Ad spend is paid directly to Google or Meta and never marked up.
Which Virginia cities do you cover?
We work with practices anywhere in Virginia. We have dedicated pages for Roanoke, Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Richmond, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Arlington, Charlottesville and Lynchburg, and most of our current Virginia work is in the New River Valley and the Roanoke Valley.
Who regulates healthcare advertising in Virginia?
Physician advertising falls under the Virginia Board of Medicine and dental advertising under the Virginia Board of Dentistry. Both boards sit within the Virginia Department of Health Professions. Federal rules also apply, including the FTC Act, the FTC endorsement guides, HIPAA, TCPA and the ADA. We check claims, credentials, reviews and testimonials against these before anything is published. This is not legal advice.
Does the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act apply to medical practices?
Often not directly. The Act exempts HIPAA covered entities and business associates, and it only applies to businesses above set consumer-volume thresholds. It can still matter for vendors, for practices that are not HIPAA covered entities, and for any health data collected outside a HIPAA relationship. Our VCDPA guide explains how to check.
Should Virginia practices market to families on Medicaid and FAMIS?
If you accept them, yes. Families covered by Virginia Medicaid and FAMIS search very specifically for practices that take their plan, and many practices never answer those searches clearly. Clear insurance pages and accurate Google Business Profile details are some of the fastest local wins we see, especially in dental.
Do you meet Virginia practices in person?
Most of the work (websites, local search, Google Business Profile, ads and reporting) is done remotely, with strategy calls in US Eastern business hours. Our US leadership is based at our Dallas office, and we can arrange in-person visits for larger engagements.
Is your marketing HIPAA-compliant?
Engagements are HIPAA-aware by design. Forms, booking flows and tracking are set up so protected health information is not sent to ad platforms or analytics tools, and we are prepared to sign a Business Associate Agreement where our work involves PHI.
