Why a 4.9 rating doesn't set you apart
Short answer: when almost every option on the map shows close to 4.9 stars, patients look at the things that do differ.
Ratings are compressed at the top: the gap between the highest- and lowest-rated cities is less than two-tenths of a star. For a patient comparing three med spas nearby, the stars look the same. What looks different is:
- How many reviews each has. A typical US med spa has 148, but the spread is wide. See how many reviews a med spa needs.
- How recent they are. The median med spa gets about 6 new reviews a month.
- Whether the owner replies. Owners reply to about 61% of reviews on average.
- What the reviews say, especially about booking. See the booking mismatch.
Protecting a high rating still matters; a drop below your city's average would be visible. But a plan that stops at "keep our rating high" is protecting table stakes.
