How much do Google Ads cost for medical practices in Chicago?
In our 2026 planning estimates, a Chicago practice pays about $12.70 a click for general dentistry, $10.20 for medical dermatology and $12.40 for IVF. That puts Chicago in the upper-middle of 20 US metros: well below San Francisco and Manhattan, well above Nashville. Cosmetic work costs far more, about $41.20 a click in cosmetic dentistry.
- General dentistry: $12.70 a click, the 6th most expensive of 20 metros.
- Cosmetic clicks cost about three times medical ones: $41.20 (cosmetic dentistry) and $28.60 (cosmetic dermatology).
- IVF is cheaper to acquire in Chicago than in most metros: about $350 per new consultation.
- Chicago practices are often open weekends, so ads compete on availability too.

“They were able to get all my ideas and work with me over a period of three to four months and create this amazing website. It's super customized, very modern, and it incorporates all the elements that I had wanted — the patient portal, nice pictures, a very interactive website, patient reviews. I would highly recommend their company to anyone who wants to make an excellent website.”
Chicago click costs against the 20-metro range
The first question most Chicago practices ask about Google Ads is the price of a click. Our three US benchmark reports estimate it by metro and category. The table shows Chicago's figure next to the most and least expensive metro in each table.
| Category | Chicago CPC | Rank by cost | Most expensive | Least expensive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| General dentistry | $12.70 | 6th of 20 | $22.50 San Francisco | $4.20 Nashville |
| Orthodontics | $22.90 | 6th of 20 | $38.20 San Francisco | $7.80 Nashville |
| Cosmetic dentistry | $41.20 | 6th of 20 | $62.80 San Francisco | $14.10 Nashville |
| Medical dermatology | $10.20 | 6th of 19 | $17.60 New York | $3.80 San Antonio |
| Cosmetic dermatology | $28.60 | 6th of 19 | $52.80 New York | $9.50 San Antonio |
| IVF | $12.40 | 14th of 16 | $28.40 Miami | $10.80 Denver |

Two patterns stand out. Chicago sits in the upper-middle band for medical and dental care, roughly half the cost of the top coastal metros. And the cosmetic multiplier is steep: a cosmetic-dentistry click costs about 3.2 times a general one, and cosmetic dermatology about 2.8 times medical. That multiplier holds across metros, so moving into cosmetic work raises the cost of entry wherever you are.
What a monthly budget buys in Chicago
Click cost alone does not tell you what to spend, but it tells you how far a budget goes. Here is the simple arithmetic at the Chicago estimates:
| Monthly ad spend | General dentistry | Orthodontics | Cosmetic dentistry | Medical dermatology |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $1,500 | ~118 clicks | ~65 clicks | ~36 clicks | ~147 clicks |
| $3,000 | ~236 clicks | ~131 clicks | ~72 clicks | ~294 clicks |
| $6,000 | ~472 clicks | ~262 clicks | ~145 clicks | ~588 clicks |
Our arithmetic: spend ÷ planning-estimate CPC, rounded down. Excludes management fees and wasted clicks.
Turn clicks into patients with your own numbers. If one in ten clicks becomes an enquiry and one in three enquiries books, a practice needs about 30 clicks per new patient, so $3,000 a month of general-dentistry clicks in Chicago would produce roughly 7 new patients. Those conversion rates are illustrations, not benchmarks; the cost per new patient calculator lets you use your own.
Fertility: one of the cheaper markets to advertise in
Illinois requires group insurers and HMOs that cover pregnancy care to cover infertility treatment, including IVF. That changes how patients search. Many already have coverage and look for an in-network clinic they trust, rather than comparing cash packages. Our planning estimates put Chicago IVF clicks at about $12.40 and a new patient consultation at about $350, the 2nd lowest of 16 metros. In Miami, where Florida has no IVF coverage law, the same consultation runs about $980.
What your Chicago ad lands next to
A paid click is only half the contest; the searcher also sees your Google profile and the map results. In our benchmark of 503 Chicago practices, review depth is close to the national norm (a review-depth index of 1.04, 10th of 20 metros), so a newer practice is not hopelessly behind on reviews.
Availability is where Chicago competitors set a high bar. 50.9% of Chicago chiropractors list a weekend day (1st of 20 metros; national 30.8%), as do 42.3% of dental practices (3rd; national 25.5%). An ad that promises "book today" next to a profile showing weekday-only hours loses to the practice that is open on Saturday. Dermatology is the weaker spot: Chicago dermatology practices average 4.5 stars against 4.62 nationally, so a strong rating there is worth showcasing in ad extensions and on the landing page.
Medical weight loss is a thinner market: Chicago clinics have a median of 49 reviews per clinic (national 42) and 55.2% of clinics have fewer than 50, so a clinic that pairs ads with a steady review routine can stand out quickly.
What this means for your practice
- Budget from patients backward. Target new patients a month × clicks per patient × Chicago click cost.
- Separate medical and cosmetic campaigns. Cosmetic clicks cost about three times as much and need their own landing pages.
- Show availability. Chicago competitors list weekend hours more often than most; match them or say clearly when you can see patients.
- Fertility clinics: lead with insurance. In a coverage state, "in network with your plan" is the message that wins the click.
- Track cost per booked patient monthly, and shift spend toward the campaigns that produce patients, not just clicks.

Common questions
How much does a Google Ads click cost for a Chicago dentist?
Our 2026 planning estimates put Chicago at about $12.70 per click for general dentistry, $22.90 for orthodontics and $41.20 for cosmetic dentistry. Actual costs depend on keywords, ad quality, targeting and the time of year.
How much should a Chicago medical practice spend on Google Ads?
Work back from patients, not clicks. Decide how many new patients you need a month, estimate how many clicks it takes to win one from your own conversion data, and multiply by the click cost. At $12.70 a click, $3,000 a month buys roughly 236 general-dentistry clicks before management fees.
Is Chicago an expensive city for healthcare advertising?
Mid-to-upper range. In our 2026 metro tables Chicago is the 6th most expensive of 20 metros for general dentistry and the 6th of 19 for medical dermatology, cheaper than San Francisco, New York, Boston and Los Angeles but above Houston, Dallas and Atlanta.
Why are IVF ads cheaper in Chicago than in Texas or Florida?
Illinois requires group insurers that cover pregnancy care to cover infertility treatment, including IVF. Covered patients tend to search for an in-network clinic rather than compare cash prices, which keeps bidding calmer. Our planning estimates put Chicago IVF clicks at $12.40 against $28.40 in Miami.
Do Google Ads work better than SEO in Chicago?
They do different jobs. Chicago review profiles sit close to the national norm (a review-depth index of 1.04), so local SEO is winnable within a year or two in most specialties. Ads fill the gap while that happens and cover high-value procedures where every booked patient counts.
