What is a PPC service, and how does it work for clinics and hospitals in India?
A PPC (pay-per-click) service plans, builds and manages paid ads for a clinic or hospital, and the ad platform charges only when someone clicks. In India this mostly means Google Ads search campaigns for people already looking for a service, plus Meta and YouTube ads for awareness. A proper service covers keywords, ad copy, landing pages, call and form tracking, budget control and weekly optimisation, all within NMC, ASCI and platform health-ad rules.
How PPC works, step by step
Every search or feed view triggers a quick auction. Advertisers bid on keywords or audiences, and the platform decides which ads show and in what order. Bid is only one factor. Google also weighs ad relevance, expected click-through and landing-page experience, so a well-built campaign can pay less per click than a careless one.
- Intent capture: a person searches a term like "knee replacement surgeon in Pune" or "dental implants near me".
- Ad match: your ad shows if you bid on that term and pass the platform's health-ad policy checks.
- Click: the person lands on a page built for that one service, not your home page.
- Conversion: they call, fill a form or start a WhatsApp chat, and tracking records it.
- Follow-up: your front desk or call team qualifies the enquiry and books a consultation.
The last two steps decide whether PPC pays off. Clicks are cheap to buy and easy to waste.
What a PPC service actually includes
| Task | What it means for a clinic or hospital |
|---|---|
| Keyword and audience research | Picking service-plus-location terms with buying intent and excluding job, course and free-treatment searches |
| Campaign structure | Separate campaigns per specialty or service, so budgets and results stay readable |
| Ad copy | Factual, verifiable claims only; no "best", "guaranteed" or discount-led hooks |
| Landing pages | One page per service with doctor credentials, facilities, timings and a clear call or form |
| Tracking | Call tracking, form and WhatsApp events, and ideally a CRM that marks which leads became appointments |
| Optimisation | Weekly search-term cleanup, bid and budget shifts, ad testing and pausing what does not convert |
| Reporting | Cost per qualified lead and booked consultations, not just clicks and impressions |
If a proposal only lists "campaign setup" and "monthly report", ask what happens in between. Most of the value sits in weekly optimisation and lead-quality feedback. Our healthcare Google Ads page explains how this cycle runs for clinics.
Which platforms clinics and hospitals use
Google Search is the core channel because people type what they need. Google Maps and local ads help when patients choose by distance. YouTube works for explaining procedures that need trust before a call. Meta (Facebook and Instagram) is technically paid social, not search, but agencies often manage it under the PPC umbrella. It suits elective and aesthetic services and lead forms. See our healthcare Meta ads page for that side. Microsoft Advertising on Bing adds a smaller but often cheaper pool of searches.
Rules that shape healthcare PPC in India
Healthcare PPC carries more rules than most categories. The NMC's 6 October 2026 guidelines allow hospitals and institutions to share factual, verifiable information such as departments, facilities, charges and a doctor directory. They rule out unverifiable superiority claims, testimonials, before-and-after images and inducements like free procedures. Individual doctors are limited to educational content in their own name.
Platform rules sit on top. Google's personalised advertising policy does not allow targeting people based on health conditions, and its healthcare and medicines policy restricts prescription-drug promotion in India. Meta bars ad copy that asserts or implies a person's health condition. The Drugs and Magic Remedies Act, 1954 still bans cure claims for listed conditions. When a claim feels borderline, check it with your compliance or legal team before it goes live.
What it costs and how to judge results
PPC has two cost layers. The first is ad spend, paid directly to Google or Meta. The second is the management fee paid to the agency or specialist. ICG retainers start from ₹20,000 a month and are custom-scoped, with Goals-Driven engagements and Performance-Linked Payout Models available. Ad spend depends on specialty, city and competition, so be wary of anyone quoting a fixed number without seeing your market.
Judge PPC on cost per qualified lead (CPQL), not cost per click. A qualified lead is a real enquiry for a service you offer, from your catchment, that your team can book. ICG's public dataset puts our median CPQL at ₹1,220 against a ₹2,100 market median. Your own figure will vary by specialty. The CPQL benchmarks page and the ad budget calculator help you set a realistic starting point.
When PPC makes sense, and when it does not
PPC fits when you need enquiries quickly, have capacity to see new patients, and can answer calls and WhatsApp messages within minutes. It works poorly when the front desk misses calls, landing pages are weak, or the service has very low search demand in your city. In those cases, fix response handling and your Google Business Profile first. Then turn on paid search with a small, tightly tracked test budget and scale only what produces booked consultations.
Give any new PPC set-up at least two to three months before judging it. The first weeks go into learning which search terms bring real enquiries and which waste money. Ask for a short written plan up front: target services, locations, the conversion actions being tracked and the CPQL you are aiming for. That plan becomes the yardstick for every monthly review.
