What is the role of marketing in healthcare?
The role of marketing in healthcare is to help people find the right provider, understand what a clinic or hospital offers, and act at the right time, while keeping the practice financially viable. Done well, it informs rather than persuades: it makes services, doctors, timings and charges easy to find and compare. In India it must also stay within the NMC's 2026 advertising guidelines, ASCI's code and the DPDP Act, which limit claims, testimonials, inducements and the use of patient data.
Five jobs marketing does for a healthcare organisation
| Role | What it looks like in practice |
|---|---|
| Discoverability | Your clinic shows up on Google Maps, search results and AI assistants when someone nearby looks for your specialty |
| Information | Clear pages on services, doctors, facilities, timings and charges, so people can decide before they call |
| Trust | Doctor credentials, registration details, educational content and well-handled reviews |
| Access | Simple ways to book: a phone line that is answered, WhatsApp, online forms and reminders |
| Sustainability | Steady patient flow that keeps departments viable and funds equipment, staff and expansion |
Notice that only the last role is about revenue directly. The other four are about making care easier to find and use. That is why ethical healthcare marketing and good patient service usually point the same way.
Why healthcare needs marketing at all
Some doctors feel good work should speak for itself. Word of mouth still matters, but patient behaviour has changed. Most people now search online before choosing a clinic, compare Google ratings and read about a procedure before booking. A highly skilled surgeon with no online presence is simply invisible to many of them.
Marketing also corrects information gaps. People often do not know that a nearby hospital has a specific department, that a diagnostic lab offers home collection, or that a condition can be managed by a specialist rather than a general physician. Factual, well-placed information helps them reach the right care sooner.
Marketing is not only aimed at the public. Hospitals build relationships with referring doctors, corporate HR teams, insurers and TPAs. Specialty clinics work with general practitioners and diagnostic labs in their area. Clear information packs, doctor profiles and regular updates on new services make these professional relationships easier to sustain. For many hospitals, this business-to-business side brings in as many cases as public advertising.
How the role differs by type of organisation
- Single-doctor clinics: local visibility, a strong Google Business Profile, reviews and reliable call handling do most of the work.
- Multi-specialty hospitals: marketing balances many departments, builds the hospital brand, supports referral networks and coordinates with a call centre.
- Diagnostic labs: local search, corporate tie-ups and home-collection bookings dominate.
- Pharma and medical device companies: marketing mostly targets healthcare professionals, within the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules and the UCPMP 2024 code, plus disease-awareness work for the public. See digital marketing for pharma.
The limits: what marketing must not do
Healthcare marketing carries responsibilities that retail marketing does not. The NMC's 6 October 2026 guidelines allow hospitals and institutions to share factual, verifiable information such as departments, facilities, accreditation, charges and a doctor directory. They rule out unverifiable superiority claims, testimonials, before-and-after images, success stories and inducements such as discounts or free procedures. Individual doctors are limited to genuinely educational content in their own name.
The Drugs and Magic Remedies Act, 1954 bans cure claims for listed conditions. ASCI requires claims to be truthful and substantiated. The DPDP Act, 2023 requires a lawful basis, usually consent, before using patient phone numbers or health details for marketing. Platform rules on Google and Meta add further limits. If you are unsure about a claim, check it with your compliance or legal team, or use a healthcare compliance review.
The classic frameworks, applied to healthcare
Many teams use the marketing mix as a checklist. In healthcare, product means your services and doctors. Price means transparent, factual charges. Place covers locations, timings and teleconsultation. Promotion covers search, social and content. People and process, often added for services, matter even more: the front desk and the booking flow shape the experience as much as any ad. Our note on the 5 Ps of healthcare marketing works through each one.
How to tell if marketing is doing its job
Good healthcare marketing shows up in a small set of numbers:
- Qualified enquiries per month, by channel and by department.
- Cost per qualified lead. ICG's public dataset shows a median of ₹1,220 against a ₹2,100 market median; your figure depends on specialty and city.
- Share of enquiries that book and attend.
- Google rating trend and review response rate.
- Revenue or case mix by source, where your systems can track it.
Our guides to healthcare marketing KPIs and measuring clinic marketing ROI explain how to set these up.
Who should own marketing inside a practice
Even when an agency runs campaigns, someone inside the practice must own marketing decisions. In a clinic, that is often the lead doctor or practice manager. In a hospital, it is usually a marketing head working with department heads and the call centre. That owner approves content for medical accuracy and compliance, sets monthly targets and makes sure operations can handle the enquiries marketing creates. Without that ownership, marketing drifts into vanity metrics and disconnected campaigns.
