What can hospitals and clinics advertise under the NMC 2026 guidelines?
Hospitals and clinics can advertise, but only factual and verifiable information: departments, facilities, services, timings, charges and a directory of their doctors. The NMC guidelines of 6 October 2026 rule out testimonials, before-and-after images, inducements and unverifiable "best" or "No. 1" claims. Individual doctors face tighter limits than the institution. Here is how the line works in practice, as of October 2026.
Are hospitals allowed to advertise in India?
Yes. Hospitals and clinics are allowed to advertise in India, but the advertising must stay factual, verifiable and free of persuasion tricks. The NMC guidelines treat the institution as the advertiser. It can tell people what it offers. It cannot promise outcomes, rank itself above others or push patients with offers.
The rules come from the National Medical Commission, titled "Guidelines on Ethical Advertising and Public Communication", read with the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002. The guidelines define "advertisement" widely. Search ads, social posts, sponsored content, influencer posts and AI-generated promotion all count.
What a hospital or clinic may publish
- Name, address, timings, contact numbers and directions.
- Departments, specialties and services actually offered.
- Facilities and equipment, described plainly.
- Accreditations and registrations that can be checked.
- Charges or package prices, stated clearly.
- A directory of doctors with qualifications and registration numbers.
- Health-awareness and patient-education content.
What is off-limits in hospital and clinic ads?
Hospital and clinic ads cannot use patient testimonials, before-and-after images, success stories, discounts or free procedures as inducements, or superiority words such as "best", "No. 1", "leading" and "top" unless independently verifiable. They also cannot portray an individual doctor promotionally or manipulate reviews and rankings.
| Ad element | Generally fine | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Headline | "Cardiology OPD open Monday to Saturday" | "Best heart hospital in the city" |
| Offer | Published consultation charges | "Free consultation this week only" |
| Proof | Verifiable accreditation, facilities list | Patient video reviews, recovery stories |
| Visuals | Building, equipment, team at work | Before-and-after photos |
| Doctors | Directory with qualifications and registration number | A single doctor pictured as the "star" of a sales ad |

Can doctors advertise in India?
Individual doctors cannot advertise themselves in the promotional sense. Under the NMC framework, a doctor may share genuinely educational content in their own name, showing their qualifications and registration number. Self-promotion, soliciting patients, using their photo for self-advertisement and letting their name endorse products or services are restricted.
This is the biggest practical change for many practices. A clinic owned by one doctor is still an institution. Its ads should be about the clinic: services, facilities, timings, charges. The doctor's personal handles should carry education, not sales.
- Move offers and service promotion to the clinic or hospital account.
- Keep the doctor's handle for explainers, myth-busting and public-health content.
- Show name, qualifications and registration number on every doctor post.
- Remove "book now with Dr X" style promotion from personal pages.
How do I advertise my hospital without breaking the rules?
Advertise your hospital by leading with information and education rather than persuasion. Use search ads for service and location queries, a Google Business Profile with accurate details, educational video and articles, and landing pages that state facts. Check every asset against the NMC list before it goes live.
In our work with hospitals across Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities, the compliant version is rarely the weaker one. Patients searching "knee replacement hospital near me" or the Hindi equivalent want facts: which surgeons, what facilities, what it costs, how to reach. Pages that answer those questions clearly also tend to be what Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT quote.
A short pre-launch checklist
- Is every claim checkable by an outsider?
- Any testimonial, review screenshot or recovery story? Remove it.
- Any "free", "discount" or "limited offer" used to pull patients? Remove it.
- Any superiority word? Replace it with a fact.
- Does the patient-data flow meet the DPDP Act 2023?

What happens if a hospital ignores the guidelines?
Complaints go to the State Medical Council, which can act against the registered medical practitioners involved. The guidelines set graded action, from a warning up to suspension or removal from the register for serious or repeated breaches. Hospitals also face exposure under consumer law and the ASCI code.
This page describes the rules at a high level, as of October 2026. It is not legal advice. Confirm specifics with your counsel or your State Medical Council before you change a campaign.
