Can a clinic or hospital call itself 'best' or 'No. 1' in ads?
Generally no. As of October 2026, the NMC guidelines bar claims such as "best", "No. 1", "leading" and "top" in medical promotion unless they are independently verifiable, and ASCI's code requires every claim to be truthful and substantiated. In practice, very few healthcare superlatives can be proved. Clinics and hospitals are safer replacing them with specific, checkable facts.
What do the rules say about superiority claims?
The NMC guidelines say registered medical practitioners and institutions must not make claims of being the best, No. 1, leading or top unless the claim is independently verifiable. They also bar claims of superiority over other doctors or hospitals. ASCI's code adds that any comparative or superlative claim must be backed by evidence.
The source is the National Medical Commission, "Guidelines on Ethical Advertising and Public Communication", read with the 2002 Regulations. Consumer protection law treats misleading claims as unfair trade practice, and the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act 1954 bars ads that claim to cure certain listed conditions.
| Risky claim | Why it is a problem | Checkable alternative |
|---|---|---|
| "Best IVF centre in Delhi" | Unverifiable superiority | "IVF and fertility services, open Monday to Saturday" |
| "No. 1 dermatologist in Pune" | Ranking with no independent basis | "MD Dermatology, Reg. No. on profile" |
| "Leading heart hospital" | Vague superiority | "Cath lab and cardiac ICU on site" |
| "Top-rated clinic" | Relies on reviews used as promotion | "Walk-in and appointment slots available" |
| "Guaranteed results" | Outcome promise | "What to expect: a step-by-step guide" |
Where these claims hide
Most clinics check their ad headlines but miss superlatives elsewhere. Look at the website homepage banner, the "About us" page, doctor bios, Google Business Profile description, Instagram bio, video thumbnails, WhatsApp auto-replies, brochures and hoardings. Old press releases and award badges in the footer count too. A claim does not become safe because it sits on a less visible page. Search engines and AI assistants read those pages and may quote them, so an old "No. 1" line can keep surfacing long after you have forgotten it.
What is the No. 1 dermatologist brand, and can anyone claim that?
There is no official ranking that makes any dermatologist, clinic or skincare brand "No. 1" in India. Rankings in magazines, award events and listing sites use their own methods, some paid or self-nominated, and are rarely independent enough to support an advertising claim. For a medical practice, using such a title in promotion is risky.
Behind this question is usually one of trust. A clinic answers it with facts: qualifications, registration, the services it actually offers, the equipment it uses and clear explanations. Our compliance-first healthcare marketing approach is built on exactly that.
What is the best hospital marketing company in India?
There is no single answer, and you should be wary of any agency that calls itself "the best". Judge an agency on evidence you can check: healthcare-only experience, understanding of NMC, ASCI and DPDP rules, transparent fees that are not linked to patients, clear reporting and references you can verify.
- How long has the agency worked only in healthcare?
- Can it explain the NMC 2026 guidelines accurately?
- Are fees retainer or project based, with no per-patient element?
- What does the monthly report contain, and who reads it with you?
- Who reviews medical content for accuracy before it goes live?
ICG has worked only in healthcare since 2018, with 150+ healthcare and life-sciences brands across its practices, and retainers from ₹20,000 per month, custom-scoped. Ask us the same questions.
What is a good slogan for a clinic under these rules?
A good clinic slogan says what the clinic does, for whom, or how it works, without ranking itself or promising results. Lines built on care, clarity, access or a specialty focus work well. Avoid "best", "No. 1", "guaranteed", "painless" and "permanent", which invite complaints and fall foul of the rules.
- "Family dental care in Sector 14, six days a week."
- "Skin and hair care, explained clearly."
- "Children's health, from newborn to teenager."
- "Your neighbourhood eye clinic."
