Which kinds of doctor listing sites matter most in India?
For most Indian clinics and doctors, Google Business Profile matters most, because it powers Google Maps and local search results. After that come doctor discovery and booking platforms, insurer and TPA network directories, official registries such as the NMC's Indian Medical Register and ABDM's professional and facility registries, other map services, and your own website's doctor directory. The right mix depends on specialty and city, but accurate, consistent details everywhere matter more than being on every site.
The main types of listing, ranked by typical impact
| Listing type | Why it matters | Who should prioritise it |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Drives Google Maps, local results, calls, directions and reviews | Every clinic, hospital and doctor with a physical practice |
| Doctor discovery and booking platforms | People compare doctors and book consultations directly in these apps | Specialties where patients choose by doctor, in metros and large cities |
| Your own website's doctor directory | The source you control; supports search, AI answers and every other listing | Everyone, especially hospitals with many doctors |
| Official registries (NMC Indian Medical Register, ABDM Healthcare Professionals Registry and Health Facility Registry) | Verify registration; increasingly linked to digital health services | All registered doctors and facilities |
| Insurer and TPA network directories | Insured patients often check network hospitals first | Hospitals and day-care centres with cashless tie-ups |
| Apple Maps and Bing Places | Smaller reach, but feed iPhone maps and Microsoft search | Clinics in areas with many iPhone users; low effort to claim |
| Specialty and local directories | Society member lists, city health directories, medical tourism portals | Specialists, and hospitals serving international patients |
Why Google Business Profile comes first
When someone searches "orthopaedic doctor near me" or "eye hospital in Indore", Google usually shows a map with three local listings before any website. Those listings come from Google Business Profile. Calls, direction requests and reviews all happen there. A complete, accurate profile with the right categories, services, photos and timings often produces more enquiries than any other listing. Our Google Business Profile management page covers what a well-run profile includes.
Doctor discovery and booking platforms
These apps let people search by specialty, area, fee and availability, and book directly. They can bring steady consultations, especially for doctors new to a city. They also have trade-offs. You may pay subscription or per-booking fees. The platform, not you, owns the patient relationship and the reviews. Your ranking inside the app follows its own rules. Use them as one channel, not your only one, and keep your own website and Google profile strong alongside.
Hospitals with many doctors
A hospital with dozens of consultants faces a bigger version of the same problem. Each doctor may appear on booking platforms, on Google, on the hospital website and in insurer lists, often with different spellings, outdated timings or old photos. When a doctor leaves, their listings can keep sending enquiries for months. Assign one team to own a master list of doctors, specialties, OPD timings and registration numbers. Update the website directory first, then push the same details to every other listing. Review the list whenever a doctor joins or leaves, not only once a year.
Official registries matter more than they used to
The NMC maintains the Indian Medical Register, which lets anyone check a doctor's registration. Under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, the Healthcare Professionals Registry and the Health Facility Registry list verified doctors and facilities. These are not marketing sites, but they confirm that you are genuine. The NMC's 2026 guidelines also expect doctors to show qualifications and registration in their own educational content. Make sure these records match your other listings.
Consistency beats coverage
Search engines and AI assistants cross-check your name, address, phone number and timings across many sources. When details conflict, such as an old phone number on one directory or a different clinic name on another, trust drops and enquiries go to the wrong place. This is called NAP consistency (name, address, phone). Before adding new listings, audit existing ones and fix mismatches. Our article on NAP consistency across directories explains why this simple task pays off.
Reviews on listing sites: what is allowed
Reviews appear on most listing sites and affect who gets the call. Ask for reviews in a neutral way and never offer discounts or gifts for them, which Google's policies prohibit. Reply to every review politely without confirming that the reviewer is a patient or discussing their care. Under the NMC's 2026 guidelines, do not reuse reviews as testimonials in your own promotion. See how many Google reviews a clinic needs for realistic targets.
A practical priority list
- Claim and complete Google Business Profile for every location and, where relevant, for each doctor.
- Build a doctor directory on your own website with qualifications, registration numbers, specialties and timings.
- Check NMC and ABDM registry entries for accuracy.
- Choose one or two doctor discovery platforms that suit your specialty and city.
- Add insurer network listings if you offer cashless treatment.
- Claim Apple Maps and Bing Places, then specialty and city directories.
- Review all listings every quarter for changed numbers, timings or doctors.
Doctors who want their own name to show well in search can also read how doctors rank for their own name.
