Medicaid and CHIP patient acquisition for pediatric and pediatric dental practices

Families with children's Medicaid or CHIP coverage often struggle to find a practice that takes their plan and has room. If your practice accepts these plans and wants more of these families, the opportunity is large and the competition for clear answers is thin. This guide covers how to be found, trusted and booked.

Guide for US practice owners · Published September 26, 2026

TL;DR
  • Families search by plan, not by program. Name the exact Medicaid managed-care and CHIP plans you accept, as your state and the plans name them.
  • An accurate insurance page and a Google Business Profile that mentions Medicaid acceptance are the fastest wins.
  • Capacity comes first. Decide how many new Medicaid/CHIP patients you can take before you advertise for them.
  • Reduce no-shows with reminders sent under proper consent, and by pointing families to the transportation and translation help their plans offer.
  • Be bilingual where your community is. Spanish-language pages and staff make a real difference in many US markets.
  • Every practice welcome — retainers from $499/mo, Goals-Driven engagements, Performance-Linked Payout Models available.

“They were able to get all my ideas and work with me over a period of three to four months and create this amazing website. It's super customized, very modern, and it incorporates all the elements that I had wanted — the patient portal, nice pictures, a very interactive website, patient reviews. I would highly recommend their company to anyone who wants to make an excellent website.”

The opportunity

Why families with Medicaid and CHIP coverage are underserved by search

Millions of American children are covered by Medicaid or CHIP. Their parents face a problem most privately insured families never think about: finding a practice that takes their plan and can actually see their child. Many call several offices before they find one. Some give up and end up in urgent care or the emergency room for problems a regular pediatrician or pediatric dentist would have handled.

Search doesn't help them much. Most practice websites say "we accept most major insurance" and stop there. Google Business Profiles rarely mention Medicaid at all. The state's provider directory may be out of date. So a parent searching "pediatric dentist that takes Medicaid near me" often finds directory listings, not practices.

That gap is the opportunity. If your practice accepts these plans and has room, a small amount of clear, accurate information can make you the answer. This is especially true for pediatric dentistry, where fewer practices in many areas accept children's Medicaid and demand is steady.

A quick refresher on the programs

Medicaid and CHIP (the Children's Health Insurance Program) are both run by each state within federal rules. CHIP covers children in families that earn too much for Medicaid but can't easily afford private coverage. Children's Medicaid includes a comprehensive benefit called EPSDT (Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment), which covers well-child care and dental services. CHIP programs also include dental coverage.

The part that matters most for marketing is this: every state names its programs differently, and many deliver coverage through private managed-care plans and dental plans. A parent rarely thinks "I have Medicaid". They think "my son has [plan name]". Your marketing has to use the names families use.

Step by step

A seven-step program for Medicaid and CHIP families

  1. Decide your capacity first. How many new Medicaid and CHIP patients can each provider and location take per month without hurting access for existing patients? Write the number down. It controls everything that follows, including whether ads run at all.
  2. Build an insurance page that names plans. List every Medicaid managed-care plan, CHIP plan and dental plan you accept, using the exact names families see on their cards. Note any limits by location, provider or age. Put the date you last checked it at the bottom, and check it at least quarterly.
  3. Say it on your Google Business Profile. Mention that you accept Medicaid and CHIP plans (and name the main ones) in the profile description and in regular posts. Keep the "accepting new patients" message current. Many families decide from the profile alone.
  4. Create a page for new Medicaid and CHIP families. Explain what to bring to the first visit, how to confirm coverage, what happens if coverage lapses, and where to find help with renewals. Link to your state's official Medicaid and CHIP information rather than restating rules that may change.
  5. Make access practical. Many Medicaid plans offer non-emergency medical transportation and interpreter services. Tell families these exist and how to arrange them through their plan. If you offer early, late or weekend hours, say so prominently. Access problems cause more missed visits than lack of interest.
  6. Go bilingual where your community is. In many US markets a large share of Medicaid and CHIP families speak Spanish at home. Spanish-language versions of your key pages, a Spanish-speaking front-desk option and bilingual reminders do more than any ad.
  7. Reduce no-shows with consented reminders. Collect text consent at intake, send reminders a few days and a day before the visit, and make rescheduling easy. Keep messages free of clinical detail. See our TCPA patient outreach guide for the rules.
Search

The searches to answer

Program searches

"pediatric dentist that accepts Medicaid", "pediatrician accepting Medicaid near me", "kids dentist CHIP". Answer these with your insurance page and Business Profile.

Plan-name searches

"[plan name] pediatric dentist", "dentist that takes [plan name] for kids". These are the most specific and often the least contested. A plan list on your site helps you appear.

Location searches

"Medicaid dentist [town]", "children's dentist [town]". Location pages that also state insurance acceptance carry both needs at once.

Urgent searches

"emergency pediatric dentist Medicaid", "same day pediatrician Medicaid". If you hold same-day slots, say so. These families will drive to you.

Spanish-language searches

"dentista para niños que acepta Medicaid", "pediatra cerca de mí". Spanish pages written by fluent speakers, not machine translation, win these.

Coverage questions

"does Medicaid cover braces for kids", "does CHIP cover dental". Short, accurate explainers that point to official sources build trust and bring families in.

In practice

What this looks like for a real practice

Our client Mill Mountain Dentistry by Opulent Dental in Roanoke, Virginia is part of the Opulent group, which engages us for SEO and Google Business Profile management. For Mill Mountain, the work centers on making the practice's insurance and Medicaid information, children's services and location unmistakably clear to both parents and search engines. None of it is clever. It is simply accurate, complete and easy to find, which is exactly what many families can't find elsewhere.

The sister practice Opulent Pediatric Dentistry in Blacksburg shows the other half of the approach: parent-education content that answers common questions about children's teeth. Families who learn from a practice's explanation are more likely to trust it with their child.

Group practices: give each location a clear role

If your group has several locations, decide which accept which plans and make each location's insurance information specific. A family that drives to one office only to learn that plan isn't accepted there won't come back. Consistent, location-level accuracy protects the whole group's reputation.

Compliance

Rules to respect

  • No inducements to government-program patients. Offering gifts or free services to attract Medicaid or CHIP patients can raise problems under federal beneficiary-inducement and anti-kickback rules. Market with information and access, not giveaways. See our anti-kickback marketing guide.
  • Accuracy about coverage. Don't imply you accept a plan you don't, or that a service is covered when it may not be. Point families to their plan to confirm.
  • Privacy. Keep coverage details and appointment information out of analytics and ad platforms. Our HIPAA-safe tracking guide covers how.
  • Plan marketing rules. Some managed-care contracts include rules about how providers may reference the plan in advertising. Check your contracts before using plan logos or names in ads.
  • Accessibility. Websites should meet WCAG 2.2 AA so families using phones, screen readers or translation tools can use them. See our accessibility guide.

What to measure

Track new Medicaid and CHIP patients per month against the capacity you set in step one, the share who arrive for their first visit, calls from your Business Profile and visits to your insurance page. If the no-show rate is high, fix reminders and access before spending more on visibility.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the difference between Medicaid and CHIP for children?

Both are public coverage programs run by each state within federal rules, and both cover children. CHIP (the Children's Health Insurance Program) covers children in families whose income is too high for Medicaid but who cannot easily afford private coverage. Each state names and runs its programs differently, often through private managed-care plans, so families usually know their plan name rather than the program name.

Do Medicaid and CHIP cover children's dental care?

Yes. Children's Medicaid includes dental services through the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment (EPSDT) benefit, and CHIP programs include dental coverage. Details such as which dental plans or administrators are used vary by state, so list the specific dental plans you accept.

Should we advertise that we accept Medicaid?

If you accept it and have capacity, yes, clearly and accurately. Many families call practice after practice before finding one that takes their plan. A plain statement on your website and Business Profile saves them that effort. If you only accept Medicaid for certain providers, locations or ages, say exactly that.

How do we avoid being overwhelmed with new Medicaid patients?

Set a monthly target for new Medicaid and CHIP patients per location and per provider, and adjust your marketing to it. You can pause ads, update your Business Profile and change the "accepting new patients" status on your insurance page as capacity changes. Marketing should follow your schedule, not the other way round.

Can we text Medicaid families appointment reminders?

Appointment reminders are usually welcome, but texting is covered by the TCPA and your own privacy policy. Collect consent for texts at intake, keep reminder messages free of clinical detail, and honor opt-outs straight away. Our TCPA guide explains the rules in more detail.

A note on this guide: it explains marketing practice, not legal advice. Rules on privacy, advertising and insurance change and vary by state, so confirm anything compliance-related with your own counsel.
