How do you market a brand-new (de novo) dental practice?

You market a de novo dental practice in stages: build the digital foundations before the doors open, use paid search to fill the first chairs, and let reviews and local SEO take over as they mature. A new office has no reviews, rankings or patient base, so the plan buys early visibility while it earns lasting visibility.

Guide for US practice owners · Published October 15, 2026

TL;DR
  • Start before opening: the website, Google Business Profile, phone system and booking flow should be live and tested before the first patient day.
  • Paid search carries the first months, because a new office has no reviews or organic rankings yet.
  • Reviews are the first organic asset to build: ask every satisfied new patient, with consent and without incentives.
  • Track every call and booking by source from day one, so you know which spend to keep when the launch budget tapers.
  • Every practice welcome — retainers from $499/mo, Goals-Driven engagements, Performance-Linked Payout Models available.

Client video · Practice website build
“They were able to get all my ideas and work with me over a period of three to four months and create this amazing website. It's super customized, very modern, and it incorporates all the elements that I had wanted — the patient portal, nice pictures, a very interactive website, patient reviews. I would highly recommend their company to anyone who wants to make an excellent website.”

The core problem

Why is marketing a de novo practice different from growing an established one?

An established practice has reviews, rankings, a recall list and word of mouth working for it. A de novo office has none of these on opening day. Every early patient has to be found and persuaded from scratch, so launch marketing leans on channels that work without history, while it builds the assets that compound later.

Three gaps define the first year:

  • No social proof. A Google profile with no reviews looks risky next to offices with hundreds.
  • No organic visibility. A new domain and a new map listing take time to earn rankings.
  • No internal referral engine. There are no existing patients to refer family members or return for hygiene.

The practical answer is a staged plan. Paid channels buy visibility while reviews, local SEO and recall build up behind them. Owners who skip the foundation work and go straight to ads tend to pay more per new patient, because the clicks land on a thin website and an empty profile.

Timeline

What should a new dental practice do before and after opening day?

Work backward from the opening date. The digital foundations need to be live before the first patient day, the launch push runs through the first quarter, and the plan shifts toward organic channels as reviews and rankings arrive. The table shows a typical sequence; adjust it to your build-out schedule.

StageMain tasksWhat "done" looks like
Before opening (from lease signing)Name and domain checks, brand basics, website build, phone and booking setup, insurance and payment informationWebsite live with one page per core service and a working booking path
Final weeks before openingGoogle Business Profile with a future opening date, local listings, signage, neighbor and employer outreachProfile verified, listings consistent, front desk scripts written
Opening monthPaid search on high-intent terms, grand-opening outreach, review requests from the first patientsCalls and bookings tracked by source; first reviews arriving
First 90 daysRefine ads by cost per booked patient, add service pages, weekly profile postsClear view of which keywords and channels book patients
Months four to 12Local SEO content, recall and reactivation, community and referral relationshipsOrganic calls growing; paid budget focused on profitable services

Google Business Profile lets you add a future opening date, so you can set up and verify the listing before launch. The office must be a real location that serves patients in person during stated hours.

Foundations

Which marketing foundations must be live before the first patient?

Five foundations should be finished before opening: a fast website, a verified Google Business Profile, a tracked phone line, online booking or a clear request form, and written front desk scripts. Each one is cheap to set up early and expensive to fix after ads are already sending traffic to it.

Website

Build one page per service you want to sell, such as implants, clear aligners, emergency visits and family dentistry. Show your accepted insurance plans or payment options, your address, hours and parking. Our guide to what a dental website needs to convert new patients lists the elements in detail.

Google Business Profile

Choose the right primary category, add services, hours, photos of the finished office and team, and a booking link. Keep the name, address and phone identical everywhere it appears online.

Phones and follow-up

Use call tracking that records the source of each call. Decide who answers during lunch and after hours. Paying for ad clicks that ring an unanswered phone is an avoidable early mistake.

Tracking and privacy

Set up analytics that measure bookings without sending patient information to ad platforms. HHS guidance on online tracking technologies is relevant to booking and intake pages, so use HIPAA-safe tools and confirm the setup with your counsel.

Launch channels

Which channels should a new dental office spend on first?

Many de novo offices start with Google Ads on high-intent searches, such as emergency dentist, dentist accepting new patients and specific services near the office. Paid search captures people already looking. Social ads and community outreach build awareness around it, and organic channels grow underneath.

  • Google Ads search campaigns: a tight radius around the office, campaigns split by service, call tracking on every ad.
  • Google Business Profile: free, and it starts gathering calls as soon as reviews appear.
  • Meta ads (Facebook and Instagram): useful for an opening announcement and new-patient offers to people who live nearby. Keep targeting broad and location-based; Meta limits targeting based on health topics.
  • Community outreach: local employers, schools, apartment complexes and nearby physicians. Introduce the office, the services and how to book.
  • Direct mail: some new offices use it in the immediate neighborhood. Track it with a dedicated phone number or landing page so you can judge it fairly.

How to size the launch budget

Size the launch budget from your new-patient goal, not from a percentage you read online. Estimate how many new patients the schedule can absorb each week, then fund the channels that can deliver them. Many owners set a higher budget for the opening months and plan a gradual taper as reviews and organic calls grow. Review it monthly against cost per booked patient.

Any new-patient offer must follow your state dental board's advertising rules. Boards differ on how free or discounted services can be advertised. For a deeper comparison of where to start, see SEO or paid ads for a new practice.

Reviews

How does a new practice get its first Google reviews?

Ask every patient who had a good first visit, before they leave and again by text or email the same day, with a direct link to the review form. Make asking part of checkout, not an occasional favor. Do not offer gifts or discounts for reviews, and never write or buy them.

The FTC rule on fake reviews and testimonials took effect in October 2024. It bans fake reviews, paying for reviews that express a particular sentiment, and suppressing negative reviews through threats or false accusations. Undisclosed reviews from staff or their relatives also create risk. Confirm details with your counsel. Your state dental board may have further rules on testimonials.

Reply to each review briefly and thank the reviewer. Never confirm that a reviewer is a patient or mention any treatment detail in a reply, since that can disclose protected health information. Steady reviews from real patients do more for a new profile than a sudden burst.

Measure

How do you know the launch plan is working?

Track booked new patients by source every week, not clicks or impressions. The questions that matter are how many new patients each channel produced, what each one cost, and how many calls were missed. These numbers tell you where to put the next dollar as the launch budget starts to taper.

  1. Weekly: calls, forms and online bookings by source; missed and unreturned calls; new reviews.
  2. Monthly: cost per booked new patient for each paid channel; treatment accepted from new patients; profile calls and direction requests.
  3. Quarterly: the split between paid and organic new patients. As organic grows, shift paid budget toward the services with the best return.

FAQ

Common questions

When should a new dental practice start marketing?

Start as soon as the lease is signed and the opening date is realistic. The website, Google Business Profile, phone tracking and booking flow should be live before the first patient day. Paid search usually begins in the opening weeks, once the office can answer calls and see patients.

What is the best first marketing channel for a de novo dental office?

For most new offices, Google Ads search campaigns on high-intent terms are the fastest way to book early patients, because a new practice has no reviews or organic rankings yet. A complete Google Business Profile and a review routine should run alongside, so organic visibility grows as the paid budget tapers.

Can a new dental practice create a Google Business Profile before opening?

Yes. Google Business Profile lets a business add a future opening date, so a new dental office can set up and verify its listing before launch. The office must be a real location that serves patients in person during the hours it lists, and the details should match the website exactly.

Should a new dental practice offer a free exam or discount to attract patients?

Many new offices use a new-patient offer, but the wording must follow your state dental board's advertising rules, which differ on free and discounted services. Offers should be clear about what is included and who qualifies. Confirm the language with your counsel or the board before running it in ads.

How long does it take a new dental practice to rank on Google?

It varies by market, competition and how quickly reviews and content build. A new office usually relies on paid search first while its Google profile, reviews and service pages earn visibility. Tracking organic calls and bookings each month shows when organic channels can carry more of the new-patient flow.

A note on this guide: it explains marketing practice, not legal advice. Rules on privacy, advertising and insurance change and vary by state, so confirm anything compliance-related with your own counsel.
