How long should a healthcare page be to get cited in Google AI Overviews?
Longer than most practice pages are. In our US study, 26 of the 27 practice pages cited in AI Overviews ran past 1,500 words, and the median cited page had 2,180 (middle half: 1,650 to 2,740). Only 31% of comparable pages that were not cited reached 1,500. Length worked alongside an FAQ block, a named clinician byline and links to primary sources.
- Median cited practice page: 2,180 words; middle half 1,650–2,740.
- 96% of cited pages passed 1,500 words, against 31% of comparable pages that were not cited.
- FAQ markup (89% vs 18%) and primary-source links (78% vs 14%) separated cited pages almost as sharply.
- Pages with all four core features were cited at 3.2× the rate of pages missing two or more.

“They were able to get all my ideas and work with me over a period of three to four months and create this amazing website. It's super customized, very modern, and it incorporates all the elements that I had wanted — the patient portal, nice pictures, a very interactive website, patient reviews. I would highly recommend their company to anyone who wants to make an excellent website.”
What the cited pages looked like
Our US Healthcare AI Overview Citation Study 2026 recorded every practice website that Google's AI Overviews cited across 50 healthcare searches. There were 27. We scored each on seven structural features and compared them with practice pages on the same topics that were not cited.

Why length shows up, and why padding does not work
The median cited page had 2,180 words. The middle half ran from 1,650 to 2,740, and one plastic surgery recovery explainer reached 4,900. Most practice pages we see sit between 400 and 900 words.
Google is not counting words. Length correlates with citation because a page past about 1,500 words has room to cover the handful of sub-topics an AI answer pulls from: what the condition or procedure is, what causes it, the options and their trade-offs, cost or coverage, and recovery or maintenance. Pages that reached 1,500 words by stretching a sales pitch did not get cited. Pages that walked through those sub-topics honestly did.
So the useful target is not a number. It is coverage: answer every question a patient would ask before the consultation, on one page, and length follows.
The three features that travel with length
An FAQ that answers first
89% of cited pages had an FAQ block with FAQPage markup, against 18% of comparable pages. The cited FAQs averaged 9.4 questions, each answered in 60 to 140 words that opened with a plain one-sentence answer. Questions came from real pre-consultation conversations, not generic ones such as "Is your practice licensed?".
A named clinician
81% carried a byline naming a clinician with credentials, against 26%. The same byline also supports ordinary search rankings, so it is worth adding even before AI visibility is a goal.
Links to the sources AI already trusts
78% linked to primary sources, against 14%. Cited pages averaged 4.2 such links: typically three to agencies like HHS or CDC or the relevant specialty college, and one to a peer-reviewed journal. Pages carrying all four core features (length, FAQ markup, byline, primary sources) were cited at 3.2 times the rate of pages missing two or more, though with only 27 cited pages that multiplier is directional.
What this means for your practice
- Pick ten high-intent patient questions and check which already show an AI Overview in your metro.
- Rebuild your three best-placed pages first. Take them from 400–900 words to roughly 1,500–2,500 by covering the missing sub-topics.
- Add an 8–12 question FAQ with markup, each answer opening with one direct sentence.
- Add a clinician byline and 3–6 primary-source links.
- Keep it HIPAA-clean: aggregate outcomes, no identifiable patient stories. Every cited page in the study was.

How we know: source, sample, date and limits
Source: US Healthcare AI Overview Citation Study 2026 (Ichelon Consulting US). Sample: 50 unbranded US healthcare searches in eight clusters, run from five metros between February and August 2026; 27 practice-website citations among 168 citation slots. Each cited page was scored on structural features and compared with comparable practice pages that were not cited on the same searches.
- 27 pages is a small sample; the 3.2× multiplier has a wide confidence interval and is directional.
- Feature scoring was manual and subject to some observer variation.
- Correlation, not proof: the same practices that write long pages also tend to do the other things well.
- Google does not publish how AI Overviews select sources.

Common questions
What word count gets a healthcare page cited in AI Overviews?
In our study of 27 practice pages cited in US healthcare AI Overviews, 26 had more than 1,500 words and the median was 2,180, with the middle half between 1,650 and 2,740. Length mattered because it let pages cover the sub-topics an answer draws on, not because word count itself is scored.
Is a longer page always more likely to be cited?
No. Pages padded to reach a length did not earn citations in our sample. Cited pages were long because they covered the five or so sub-topics patients ask about: what the condition or procedure is, causes, options and trade-offs, cost or coverage, and recovery.
Do FAQ sections help with AI Overviews?
24 of 27 cited practice pages had an FAQ block with FAQPage markup, against 18% of comparable pages that were not cited. Cited FAQs averaged 9.4 questions with 60- to 140-word answers that opened with a direct one-sentence answer.
How many outbound links should a healthcare article have?
Cited practice pages averaged 4.2 links to primary sources, typically three to agencies such as HHS or CDC or the relevant specialty college and one to a peer-reviewed publisher. 78% of cited pages had them, against 14% of comparable pages.
Does HIPAA stop practices from being cited?
Not in our sample. Every cited practice page was clean by construction: no patient identifiers, no case-specific outcomes and no unconsented testimonials. Aggregate outcomes and general clinical explanation are what AI Overviews cited.
A note on this article: it reports aggregate research and explains marketing practice. It is not legal advice, and cost figures are planning estimates, not guarantees of results.
