“They were able to get all my ideas and work with me over a period of three to four months and create this amazing website. It's super customized, very modern, and it incorporates all the elements that I had wanted — the patient portal, nice pictures, a very interactive website, patient reviews. I would highly recommend their company to anyone who wants to make an excellent website.”

How do hospitals use digital marketing?
Short answer: hospitals use digital marketing to grow specific service lines, help patients find the right location and doctor, recruit staff, and keep the community informed. In practice that means search and AI visibility for services and providers, paid search for high-intent specialties, Business Profiles for every site, physician directories, email to existing patients, and content that answers health questions.
Service-line growth
Campaigns and content for orthopedics, cardiology, oncology, women's health, imaging, bariatrics, urgent care and other lines with capacity to fill.
Find a doctor and location
Provider directory pages, location pages and Business Profiles that answer "who, where, when and which insurance" in one search.
Access and price clarity
Online scheduling, urgent care wait information and price estimate tools. Hospitals must publish standard charges and a consumer-friendly display of shoppable services under CMS price transparency rules.
Reputation and reviews
Review programs and HIPAA-safe replies across every location and department profile.
Health content and AI answers
Clinician-reviewed answers to the questions patients ask, written to be cited in AI Overviews and AI assistants.
Recruitment and community
Employer brand, physician and nurse recruitment campaigns, community events and foundation work.
How to improve hospital visibility in Google search?
Short answer: start with the basics most hospitals get wrong at scale: one accurate Google Business Profile per location and eligible department, a strong page for every service line, location and provider, consistent names, addresses and phone numbers everywhere, and a clean, fast, crawlable website. Then add clinician-reviewed content that answers patient questions directly, so it can rank and be cited in AI answers.
- Business Profiles. Audit every hospital, clinic, urgent care, imaging center and department profile. Remove duplicates, fix categories and hours, and follow Google's rules for departments and individual practitioners.
- Service-line pages. One authoritative page per service, linked to the locations and providers who deliver it, with clear next steps to book or call.
- Provider directory. Crawlable provider pages with specialties, locations, accepted insurance and booking links. These often match the searches patients run by doctor name.
- Technical health. Large hospital sites collect redirects, duplicate pages and orphaned content after mergers and redesigns. Fix crawl errors and page speed before writing new content.
- Answer-first content. Headings that use patients' own questions, a direct answer under each, and a named clinical reviewer. Google says AI Overviews need no special optimization beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible, so good SEO is the route into AI answers. See SEO vs AI search for healthcare.
- Reviews. Review depth matters more than rating. In our benchmark of 9,452 US practices, the average rating was 4.77 stars, so ratings rarely set anyone apart. See the State of US Healthcare Marketing on Google 2026.
How to track SEO ROI for hospitals?
Short answer: connect organic search to booked appointments, not just traffic. Track calls, online scheduling and form requests from organic visits by service line using HIPAA-aware tools, match them to appointments in aggregate, and value each service line's appointments with figures your finance team agrees. ROI is that value, less the cost of the SEO work, over a period long enough for SEO to mature.
- Define conversions per service line: calls over a set length, scheduling completions, referral and appointment requests.
- Attribute without exposing PHI. Use call tracking and analytics set up under a BAA, keep tags off portals and booking steps that identify patients, and report in aggregate.
- Match to appointments in your scheduling or CRM system, by source and service line.
- Agree values with finance. Use a conservative contribution value per new appointment for each service line, not gross charges.
- Report trends quarterly. SEO builds over months. Track organic-sourced appointments per service line against the same quarter last year.
We report every engagement against written monthly goals in Ichelon Agency OS, with a report every Monday. For the cost side, our cost per new patient calculator is a useful starting point.
What CRM solutions give a multi-location hospital a consolidated patient pipeline across branches?
Short answer: three broad kinds exist: healthcare CRM platforms built for health systems, the patient-engagement and CRM modules offered by EHR vendors, and general CRM platforms configured for healthcare under a BAA. Each can show a combined pipeline across locations if every inquiry is captured with its source, location and service line, and stages are defined the same way everywhere.
The software matters less than the set-up. A consolidated pipeline needs:
- One inquiry record for calls, forms, chats and referrals, created automatically wherever possible.
- Shared stage definitions (inquiry, contacted, scheduled, attended) across every branch and service line.
- Integration with scheduling and the EHR, so appointments close the loop without manual re-entry.
- Role-based access so branch teams see their own patients and leaders see totals.
- Consent records for calls and texts under the TCPA.
Our multi-location marketing guide covers CRM selection for groups in more detail.
How to compare healthcare CRM vendors for large hospital networks?
Short answer: compare vendors against your own use cases, not their demos. Score each one on EHR and scheduling integration, multi-location pipeline reporting, security and BAA terms, consent management, call-tracking and marketing integrations, total cost including implementation, and how many staff will actually use it. Then run a time-limited pilot at two sites before committing network-wide.
| Criterion | What to ask |
|---|---|
| EHR and scheduling integration | Which systems are integrated today, in production, at a network of your size? |
| Pipeline reporting | Can you show one pipeline by site, service line and source, with drill-down? |
| Security and HIPAA | Will you sign our BAA? Where is data hosted, and how is access logged? |
| Consent and communications | How are call and text consents captured, stored and honored? |
| Marketing integrations | Can it receive call-tracking and web form data and send non-identifying conversion signals back? |
| Total cost | Licenses, implementation, integrations, training and internal staff time over three years. |
| Adoption | Who will use it daily, and what does their screen look like? |
What are the best healthcare CRM platforms for mid-to-large health systems?
Short answer: there is no single best platform; the right one fits your EHR, your scheduling system, your security standards and how your teams work. Mid-to-large systems usually choose between a healthcare-specific CRM, their EHR vendor's engagement tools, or an enterprise CRM configured for healthcare. Shortlist on integration and BAA terms first, then features.
- Healthcare-specific CRM platforms come with patient-journey and service-line models built in, but check how well they integrate with your EHR.
- EHR-vendor engagement tools sit closest to clinical and scheduling data, but may be weaker on marketing attribution.
- Enterprise CRMs configured for healthcare are flexible and widely supported, but depend heavily on implementation quality and need a BAA.
We do not sell CRM software, and we work inside whichever system you choose. If you are weighing software against a managed team, read agency vs all-in-one automation platforms and agency vs in-house team.
Hospital marketing compliance: HIPAA, tracking and scale
Short answer: hospitals carry the heaviest marketing compliance load in healthcare: many websites and tools, thousands of staff, and close regulatory attention to tracking technologies. Every vendor that handles PHI needs a BAA, tracking must stay off pages where patients identify themselves, and patient stories need written authorization.
HHS issued guidance on online tracking technologies in December 2022 and updated it in March 2024. In June 2024, in a case brought by the American Hospital Association (American Hospital Association v. Becerra), a federal court in Texas vacated the part of that guidance that treated an IP address plus a visit to an unauthenticated public page about a health condition as PHI. Tracking on portals, scheduling flows and intake forms remains high-risk without a BAA.
Our HIPAA compliance by role guide sets out what marketing staff, front desk, providers and vendors each need to know, and HIPAA compliance as you scale covers growth from one site to many. For tracking specifically, see our HIPAA-safe website tracking guide.
Many hospital marketing and strategy leaders also follow the Society for Health Care Strategy & Market Development (SHSMD), a professional society of the American Hospital Association, for industry education.

Common questions from hospital marketing teams
Do you sign a Business Associate Agreement with hospitals?
Yes. Ichelon Consulting US signs a BAA with every US client before any work that touches protected health information. Hospital legal and compliance teams often have their own BAA template; we work from yours or ours, and we list the tools we will use so your privacy office can review them.
Can you work alongside our in-house marketing team?
Yes, and that is how most hospital engagements run. Your team keeps brand, communications, service-line strategy and clinical approvals. We take on specialist channels such as SEO and AI search, paid search, Business Profiles and listings, landing pages and reporting, and fit into your approval process.
Can you start with one service line?
Yes. Many hospitals start with one service line that has open capacity and clear goals, such as orthopedics, cardiology, women's health, imaging or urgent care. We benchmark it, agree written goals, run it for a quarter and then decide together whether to extend the work.
How do you handle tracking on hospital websites?
We keep tracking tags off patient portals, scheduling flows and any page where a patient identifies themselves, and send ad platforms only non-identifying conversion signals. We review your current tags against HHS guidance on online tracking technologies, read in light of the 2024 American Hospital Association v. Becerra ruling, with your privacy team.
How much does hospital marketing support cost?
Every engagement is custom-scoped to the service lines, locations and channels involved. Ichelon Consulting US retainers start from $499/month, with Goals-Driven engagements and Performance-Linked Payout Models available. Ad spend is separate and billed by the platforms directly to the hospital.
Who will we work with?
