How can I analyze competitors in healthcare digital marketing?

To analyze healthcare competitors, start with the searches your patients actually type, note who wins them, and compare those winners with you on five layers: map listing, website, paid ads, reviews and AI answers. Your real digital competitors are often not the practices you think about most. They are whoever shows up when a patient searches near you.

TL;DR
  • Define competitors by search results, not by who you meet at referral dinners.
  • Compare five layers: Google Business Profile, website, paid ads, reviews and AI assistant answers.
  • Use the public transparency tools: Google's Ads Transparency Center and Meta's Ad Library show ads competitors are running.
  • Turn findings into gaps, then act on the two or three that touch booked appointments soonest.
  • Every practice welcome — retainers from $499/mo, Goals-Driven engagements, Performance-Linked Payout Models available.

“They were able to get all my ideas and work with me over a period of three to four months and create this amazing website. It's super customized, very modern, and it incorporates all the elements that I had wanted — the patient portal, nice pictures, a very interactive website, patient reviews. I would highly recommend their company to anyone who wants to make an excellent website.”

Step one

Who are my real competitors online?

Your online competitors are the practices that appear for the searches that bring you patients. Write down ten to fifteen searches a new patient would use, by service and by area. Run each from a location near your office, in a private browser window. The names that keep appearing in the map results and top organic results are your competitive set.

Expect surprises. A hospital outpatient department, a multi-location group, or a practice two neighborhoods away may outrank you for your highest-value service. Meanwhile the practice across the street may barely show up. Search from several spots in your service area, because local results shift with distance.

Group the searches

  • Service searches: the procedure or condition category plus a city or "near me".
  • Insurance and access searches: accepting new patients, same-day, weekend, a named plan type.
  • Brand searches: your practice name and your providers' names. Check whether a competitor's ad appears above you.

Keep five or six competitors at most. A shorter list you study properly is worth more than twenty you skim.

The audit

What should I compare between my practice and competitors?

Compare the parts of their marketing a patient sees before booking. Look at the map listing, the service pages, the ads, the reviews and what AI assistants say. For each layer, note what they do that you do not, and what they do badly. Both are useful.

LayerWhat to checkWhere to lookWhat it tells you
Google Business ProfilePrimary category, services listed, photos, posting frequency, review count and recent repliesGoogle Maps and SearchWhy they win or lose the map pack
WebsiteDedicated page per service, location pages, provider bios, booking options, page speed on mobileTheir site, on a phoneWhich searches they are built to rank for
Paid search and socialServices they advertise, offers, landing pages, how long ads have runGoogle Ads Transparency Center; Meta Ad LibraryWhich services they are willing to pay for
ReviewsRecurring praise and complaints, reply tone, recencyTheir Google profile and other review platformsWhat patients value and where competitors disappoint
AI answersWho ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews name for your core questionsAsk each assistant your patients' questionsWhose content AI engines trust

Google describes its Ads Transparency Center as a searchable hub of ads from verified advertisers. Meta's Ad Library shows active ads that pages run across its apps. Neither shows a competitor's budget for ordinary ads, so treat spend as unknown.

Reading the signals

How do I turn competitor research into a marketing plan?

Turn each finding into a gap, then rank gaps by how directly they affect booked appointments. A competitor ranking for a service you also offer, with a page you lack, is a high-value gap. A competitor posting more often on social media is usually a low-value one. Act on two or three gaps at a time.

  1. List the gaps: "They have a page for each implant option; we have one general page."
  2. Score each gap: value of the service, effort to close it, and how quickly it could move bookings.
  3. Pick the first three: usually a profile fix, a service page and one review or ad change.
  4. Set a measure: map ranking for a named search, calls from the profile, or booked consults from a page.
  5. Repeat quarterly: run the same searches from the same spots so you compare like with like.

Reviews deserve special attention. Read competitors' one-star and two-star reviews carefully. Complaints about wait times, billing surprises or rushed visits tell you what to promise, and keep, in your own messaging. Our free practice visibility audit runs a version of this comparison for your market.

Market context matters

The same gap costs more to close in a crowded metro. Our pages on the most competitive US cities for healthcare marketing explain why timelines differ by market.

Guardrails

What should I avoid when using competitor information?

Study competitors, but do not copy them, misrepresent them, or fake your way past them. Copied content tends to perform poorly and can raise copyright issues. Comparative claims must be truthful and substantiated. Fake or incentivized reviews are banned by federal rule. State licensing boards may add limits on comparative or superlative claims.

  • Comparisons: the FTC's policy statement on comparative advertising says truthful, non-deceptive comparisons are permitted, and that such claims are judged like any other ad. You need evidence for what you say about a competitor.
  • Brand bidding: bidding on a competitor's name is a business decision, but ad text that implies you are them is misleading. Check Google's trademark policy before you try it.
  • Reviews: never post reviews of competitors, or pay for reviews of yourself. The FTC rule on fake reviews and testimonials took effect in October 2024.
  • Patient privacy: do not quote a competitor's patient reviews in your ads.

Legal limits vary by state and specialty, so confirm comparative claims with your counsel before they run.

How we help

How does Ichelon Consulting US run competitor analysis?

We build the search list with you, map who wins each search across your service area, and audit the five layers for your top competitors. SIE, our search intelligence tool, tracks those rankings over time so the quarterly comparison is consistent. We also check which practices AI assistants cite, using the approach in who Google AI Overviews cite for healthcare.

The findings become a ranked gap list and a monthly plan. Goals are agreed with you, tracked on Ichelon Agency OS, and reported every Monday. We sign a BAA with every US client. Retainers start from $499/month, custom-scoped. Our healthcare marketing agency USA page covers the full service, or book a call with the US team.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I find out who my healthcare competitors are online?

List the searches a new patient would type for your main services and area, then run them from locations near your office in a private browser window. The practices that repeatedly appear in the map results and top organic results are your digital competitors, even if they are not the practices you usually compare yourself with.

Can I see what ads my competitors are running?

Yes. Google's Ads Transparency Center lets anyone search ads from verified advertisers by advertiser or website, and Meta's Ad Library shows active ads that pages run across Meta's apps. Neither tool shows spend for ordinary commercial ads, so use them to see services, offers and landing pages, not budgets.

How often should a practice do a competitor analysis?

A full analysis once a year and a lighter check every quarter suits most practices. Run the same searches from the same locations each time so results are comparable. Do an extra check when a new practice opens nearby, a competitor rebrands, or your calls from Google drop without an obvious cause.

Is it legal to compare my practice to a competitor in ads?

The FTC permits truthful, non-deceptive comparative advertising and expects claims about a competitor to be substantiated. State licensing boards and professional rules may add limits, especially on superlatives or outcome claims. A practice should confirm any comparative ad with its counsel and keep the evidence behind each claim on file.

What is the most useful part of a healthcare competitor analysis?

Usually the review and service-page comparison. Competitors' negative reviews show what patients dislike in your market, and their service pages show which searches they are built to win. Together they point to concrete fixes, such as a missing service page or a promise about wait times, that can affect bookings within months.

A note on this guide: it explains marketing practice, not legal advice. Rules on privacy, advertising and insurance change and vary by state, so confirm anything compliance-related with your own counsel.
