What types of Meta ads work for healthcare in India?
The Meta ad types that tend to work for healthcare in India are lead form (Instant Form) ads, click-to-WhatsApp ads, short video and Reels ads, carousel ads and website traffic or conversion ads, supported by retargeting of people who engaged with earlier content. Which one fits depends on the service: elective and aesthetic treatments suit video and WhatsApp, while consultations suit lead forms. All of them must follow Meta's health-ad rules, the NMC's 2026 guidelines and the DPDP Act.
The main Meta ad types and where they fit
| Ad type | How it works | Good fit in healthcare |
|---|---|---|
| Lead form (Instant Form) ads | A form opens inside Facebook or Instagram, pre-filled with the user's name and phone | Consultation enquiries, health check packages, camp registrations |
| Click-to-WhatsApp ads | Tapping the ad opens a WhatsApp chat with your clinic | Services where people want to ask questions first, such as dental, dermatology, IVF and physiotherapy |
| Reels and short video ads | Vertical video in Reels, Stories and feeds | Doctor-led explainers, facility walk-throughs, awareness of new services |
| Carousel ads | Several images or cards that people swipe through | Showing departments, doctors, facilities or steps in a process |
| Single image ads | One static image with text | Simple announcements: new branch, timings, a health camp |
| Website traffic and conversion ads | Sends people to a landing page and optimises for bookings or form fills | Clinics with strong landing pages and conversion tracking |
| Call ads | A "Call now" button dials the clinic directly | Urgent or local services where people prefer to speak to someone |
| Retargeting ads | Shown to people who watched your videos, visited your site or engaged with your page | Reminding interested people about longer-decision services |
Lead form ads: high volume, mixed quality
Lead forms are easy to fill because Meta pre-fills contact details. That makes them cheap per lead, but some leads are accidental or curious. Add one or two qualifying questions, such as preferred location or the service needed. Call every lead quickly; interest fades within hours. Our article on lead response time explains why speed matters so much.
Click-to-WhatsApp: closer to how Indians already enquire
Many people in India prefer to message a clinic before calling. Click-to-WhatsApp ads start that conversation directly. They often produce fewer but warmer enquiries than forms. The catch is staffing: someone must reply within minutes during clinic hours, with ready answers on timings, location and charges. An automated first reply that asks qualifying questions can help, as in our WhatsApp AI lead qualifier.
Video and Reels: building trust before the enquiry
Healthcare decisions involve trust. Short videos of a doctor explaining a procedure, answering common questions or showing the facility help people feel ready to enquire. Under the NMC's 2026 guidelines, individual doctors may appear in genuinely educational content in their own name, with qualifications and registration shown. Keep videos factual, avoid patient testimonials and before-and-after footage, and avoid AI-generated promotional campaigns, which the guidelines prohibit.
Retargeting: useful, but handle with care
Retargeting people who watched a video or visited your website helps with services people take weeks to decide on. Two limits apply. Meta does not allow ad copy that asserts or implies personal attributes, so "Still struggling with hair loss?" is not allowed, but "Learn about hair loss treatment options" is. And under the DPDP Act, 2023, uploading patient phone lists for custom audiences needs a lawful basis, usually clear consent for that purpose. See our healthcare retargeting funnel for a compliant structure.
Targeting limits on Meta
Meta removed many detailed targeting options related to health conditions in 2022. You cannot target people by a specific disease. In practice, healthcare campaigns rely on location, age, broad interests and lookalike or engaged audiences, with the creative doing most of the targeting work. A video that clearly speaks to people considering knee replacement will attract the right viewers even with broad targeting.
What to avoid in any Meta format
- Superiority claims such as "best", "No. 1" or "guaranteed results".
- Testimonials, success stories and before-and-after images, which the NMC's 2026 guidelines bar.
- Discounts, free procedures and other inducements.
- Cure claims for conditions listed under the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act, 1954.
- Copy that implies the viewer has a medical condition.
Matching ad type to the decision stage
People move through stages before booking a healthcare service. Early on, they are learning; here, Reels, short videos and carousels that educate work well. In the middle, they compare options; doctor-led explainers and facility walk-throughs help. Near the decision, they want to ask a question or book; lead forms, click-to-WhatsApp and call ads fit best. Many clinics run only bottom-stage lead ads and then wonder why costs keep rising. A mix that feeds new people into the top while converting warm audiences at the bottom tends to hold costs steadier over time.
Measuring which type works
Compare ad types on cost per qualified lead and booked consultations, not cost per lead alone. A cheap form lead that never answers the phone costs more than a WhatsApp chat that books. Sending booked-appointment data back to Meta through the Conversions API helps the system find more people like your real patients. Our Meta Conversions API setup service covers that link.
