Is there a medical AI like ChatGPT that doctors in India can use?
Yes. Doctors in India can use general AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, as well as specialised medical AI tools for literature search, clinical documentation, imaging support and practice admin. None of them replaces clinical judgement. Use them within three limits: do not share identifiable patient data without a lawful basis under the DPDP Act, follow ICMR's ethical guidelines for AI in healthcare, and respect the NMC's 2026 rules on AI in promotion.
The main kinds of AI tools doctors use
| Category | Typical use in an Indian practice | Main caution |
|---|---|---|
| General AI assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity) | Summarising papers, drafting letters and patient-education text, explaining guidelines, admin writing | Can state errors confidently; never paste identifiable patient data into consumer accounts |
| Medical literature and evidence assistants | Answering clinical questions with cited journal sources | Check the citations yourself; coverage of Indian data varies |
| Ambient scribe and documentation tools | Turning consultation audio into structured notes and prescriptions | Patient consent, data storage location and accuracy of drug names and doses |
| Clinical decision-support and imaging AI | Flagging findings on scans, ECGs or retinal images; risk scores | Software for diagnosis can fall under medical device rules; check regulatory approval |
| Practice and marketing AI | Call summaries, WhatsApp reply drafts, lead scoring, content drafts | NMC limits on AI in promotion; human review before anything is published |
What general AI assistants are good at for doctors
General assistants work well for language-heavy, low-risk tasks. A doctor can ask for a plain-language summary of a new guideline, a first draft of a referral letter, or a patient handout in Hindi or a regional language. They help prepare CME talks and structure a research paper. Many doctors also use them for practice admin, such as drafting staff SOPs or replying to vendor emails.
They are weaker on exact drug doses, rare conditions and India-specific guidance. They can invent references. Treat every clinical output as a draft that you check against a trusted source.
Specialised medical AI
Purpose-built tools are trained or tuned on medical data and often cite sources. Some read imaging, some transcribe consultations, and some sit inside EMR or hospital software. Under India's Medical Devices Rules, 2017, software intended for diagnosis or treatment can be regulated as a medical device by CDSCO. Before relying on a diagnostic AI tool, ask the vendor about its regulatory status, validation on Indian patients and where data is stored.
Rules that apply in India
- DPDP Act, 2023: patient names, phone numbers and health details are personal data. Sharing them with an AI service needs a lawful basis, usually consent, and a data processing agreement with the vendor. De-identify wherever possible. Our DPDP guide for healthcare covers the basics.
- ICMR ethical guidelines (2023): ICMR's guidelines for AI in biomedical research and healthcare stress human oversight, accountability, data privacy and transparency.
- NMC guidelines, 6 October 2026: AI-generated promotional campaigns for commercial gain are prohibited, and permitted AI content must disclose its AI origin. Individual doctors may share genuinely educational content in their own name, with qualifications and registration shown.
This is general information, not legal advice. Check specific uses with your compliance or legal team.
Questions to ask before choosing an AI tool
Whether you are a solo practitioner or a hospital IT team, a few questions filter out most poor choices:
- Where is the data stored, and is it used for training? Business plans of general assistants usually let you switch off training on your data. Check this in writing.
- Does it cite sources? For clinical questions, a tool that links to journals or guidelines is easier to verify than one that answers from memory.
- Has it been tested on Indian patients and Indian languages? Accuracy can drop for local drug brand names, regional languages and disease patterns common in India.
- Who is accountable for errors? The treating doctor remains responsible for clinical decisions. The vendor contract should still set out support, uptime and breach notification duties.
- Can it connect to your EMR or hospital system? Copying and pasting between tools adds errors and privacy risk.
Using AI for your practice's content and marketing
Many clinics now use AI to draft blogs, video scripts and social posts. The safe pattern is AI-assisted, not AI-generated promotion. The doctor or a medical reviewer checks facts, adds clinical experience and signs off. The content stays educational, discloses AI involvement where required, and avoids superiority claims or testimonials. We explain the difference in AI-assist vs AI-generated healthcare content.
There is a second side to this. Patients and referring doctors increasingly ask AI assistants questions about specialties and providers. Whether those assistants mention your hospital depends on clear, factual, well-structured content across your website and Google Business Profile. Read LLM optimisation for healthcare to see how that works.
A sensible way to start
- Pick two low-risk tasks, such as literature summaries and admin drafts.
- Use business or enterprise accounts with data controls, not personal free accounts.
- Write a one-page clinic policy: what data may never be entered, who reviews outputs, and how AI use is disclosed.
- Review results monthly and expand only where accuracy holds up.
