What is the difference between ORM and PR for a hospital?
PR (public relations) shapes the story a hospital tells through media, events and public statements, while ORM (online reputation management) manages what patients actually find and read online: Google reviews, search results, social comments, forums and videos. PR is mostly outbound and episodic. ORM is continuous and patient-facing. A hospital needs both, but ORM usually has the more direct effect on OPD enquiries.
How do ORM and PR differ in practice?
PR earns attention through journalists, conferences, doctor interviews and press releases, and is judged by coverage and message. ORM monitors and improves the hospital's online footprint every day, and is judged by ratings, review response, search results and sentiment. They share goals but use different teams, tools and timelines.
| Aspect | PR | ORM |
|---|---|---|
| Main audience | Media, public, referring doctors, government | Patients and families searching online |
| Main channels | News, events, interviews, press releases | Google Business Profile, search results, social media, forums, YouTube comments |
| Rhythm | Campaigns and announcements | Daily monitoring and response |
| Typical work | Story pitching, spokesperson preparation, crisis statements | Review requests and replies, profile accuracy, search-result clean-up, comment moderation |
| Success measures | Coverage quality, message accuracy | Rating trend, response time, page-one search results, sentiment |
| Link to enquiries | Indirect, builds awareness | Direct, shapes the decision at the moment of search |
A simple test shows the difference. A newspaper feature on a new cardiac unit is PR. What a family sees when they search the hospital's name that evening, including the rating, the latest reviews and how the hospital replied, is ORM. If that search undermines the feature, the PR budget has been partly wasted. Many hospitals give these jobs to different vendors who never speak, which is where the gaps appear.
What is the difference between SEO and ORM?
SEO makes the hospital's own pages rank for the searches patients make. ORM manages everything else that appears about the hospital, especially reviews, third-party listings and social content, and the sentiment those carry. SEO wins visibility; ORM makes that visibility trustworthy. They overlap on branded search, which both need to control.
When a patient searches the hospital's name, the first page shows your website, your Business Profile with its rating, directory listings, news, videos and sometimes complaints. SEO strengthens your own pages so they own more of that page. ORM handles the rating, the replies and any negative or outdated results. Increasingly, AI answers from Google, ChatGPT and Gemini summarise this same footprint, so both disciplines feed what AI tools say about you.
What is the role of hospital marketing, and where do ORM and PR fit?
Hospital marketing exists to make the right patients aware of the hospital's services, help them choose it, and bring them back for continued care, while staying within medical advertising rules. PR builds awareness and authority. ORM protects the choice moment. Search, ads and referral programmes create the enquiries in between.
- Awareness: PR, doctor-led educational content, community programmes.
- Consideration: SEO, Google Business Profile, ORM, the hospital website.
- Enquiry: search ads, social ads, WhatsApp and call handling.
- Retention: follow-ups, check-up reminders, service quality, and the reviews that result.
Under the National Medical Commission guidelines of 6 October 2026, hospitals may publish factual, verifiable information but not testimonials, before/after images or superlative claims. That applies to PR copy, social posts and ORM replies alike. Our NMC compliance audit checks all three.
How do hospital quality indicators affect reputation?
Online reputation reflects the patient experience: waiting times, billing clarity, staff behaviour, cleanliness, discharge speed and how complaints are handled. Hospitals that track and fix these operational indicators see better reviews over time. ORM cannot make a poor experience look good for long; it can only make sure good care is visible.
Clinical quality indicators, such as infection rates and readmissions, are set and reported through the hospital's quality systems and regulators, not marketing. What marketing can do is read reviews as operational feedback. Group complaints by theme every month and send them to the right department. When the same complaint stops appearing, the rating usually follows.
| Review theme | Owner |
|---|---|
| Long waits in OPD | Operations |
| Billing surprises | Finance and front office |
| Staff behaviour | HR and nursing |
| Slow discharge | Ward management |
| Hard to reach by phone | Call centre or front desk |
Which should a hospital invest in first, ORM or PR?
Most hospitals should get ORM foundations right first: accurate profiles, a steady and honest review routine, quick professional replies, and monitoring of search results and social mentions. PR then amplifies a reputation that holds up when patients check it online. PR on top of a weak online footprint wastes the attention it earns.
A crisis is the exception: when an incident reaches the news, PR and ORM must work together on one message. Review requests should never involve incentives; see why clinics should not offer incentives for reviews. ICG offers healthcare online reputation management in India, with retainers from ₹20,000/month, custom-scoped.
