What is a CTA in Facebook ads, and which CTA works best for clinics?
A CTA (call to action) in Facebook ads is the button and line of copy that tell people what to do next, such as "Book Now", "Call Now", "Send WhatsApp Message" or "Learn More". No single CTA works best for every clinic. In India, "Send WhatsApp Message" often suits services where people want to ask first, "Book Now" suits routine consultations with online booking, and "Call Now" suits urgent or local services. The right choice depends on the service, the decision stage and how fast your team responds.
Two parts of a CTA
Every Facebook and Instagram ad has a CTA button chosen from Meta's fixed list. The ad copy and video usually carry a written CTA as well, such as "Message us to check doctor availability". Both should point to the same action. If the button says "Book Now" but the copy says "Call us", people hesitate.
Common CTA buttons and when clinics should use them
| CTA button | What happens on tap | Best fit for clinics |
|---|---|---|
| Send WhatsApp Message | Opens a WhatsApp chat with your clinic number | Dental, dermatology, physiotherapy, IVF and other services where people ask about timings, charges or suitability first |
| Book Now | Opens a booking page or form | Routine consultations, health checks and diagnostics where online booking works smoothly |
| Call Now | Dials your clinic directly | Urgent or local services, and audiences who prefer speaking to a person |
| Sign Up | Usually opens an Instant Form | Health camps, awareness talks, free screenings run as public-health activities |
| Learn More | Opens a landing page | Educational ads and early-stage awareness, such as explaining a procedure |
| Send Message | Opens Messenger or Instagram Direct | Clinics that staff Instagram DMs well, often aesthetic and wellness practices |
| Get Quote | Opens a form asking for details | Rarely suitable; can feel transactional for medical services |
| Get Offer | Shows a promotion | Avoid: discounts and offers count as inducements under NMC rules |
Why WhatsApp often wins in India
Many people in India are more comfortable messaging than filling a form or calling a clinic they do not know. A WhatsApp chat lets them ask about timings, location and charges first. It also gives the clinic a direct line for reminders later, with consent. The weakness is speed. If a message waits hours for a reply, interest fades. Clinics using this CTA need someone, or an automated first response, answering within minutes. Our comparison of WhatsApp vs form fill for lead capture goes deeper.
How to choose the right CTA
- Match the decision stage. People new to a procedure respond better to "Learn More". People ready to see a doctor respond to "Book Now" or "Send WhatsApp Message".
- Match your capacity. Only use "Call Now" if calls are answered throughout ad hours. Only use WhatsApp if replies are quick.
- Match the service value. High-consideration services, such as IVF or joint replacement, need conversation. Low-consideration services, such as a routine dental check-up, can go straight to booking.
- Test, then decide. Run two CTAs on the same creative and audience. Compare cost per qualified lead and booked consultations, not clicks.
What the written CTA should say
The written CTA in your copy should be specific and factual. Good examples: "Message us to check our orthopaedic surgeon's OPD timings", "Book a consultation at our Andheri clinic", "Call to ask about sports injury physiotherapy". Avoid pressure and promises. Lines such as "Limited free slots", "Guaranteed results" or "Flat discount this week" conflict with the NMC's 6 October 2026 guidelines, which bar inducements and unverifiable claims, and with ASCI's code. Copy that implies the viewer has a condition, such as "Tired of your acne?", also breaks Meta's personal attributes policy. Our guide to writing ASCI-clean ad copy shows safe alternatives.
What happens after the tap matters more
A CTA only starts the conversation. Results depend on what follows:
- Forms should be short, with one or two qualifying questions.
- WhatsApp should open with a friendly greeting and quick-reply options, such as timings, location and booking.
- Calls should reach a trained person, not a long phone menu.
- Every lead should be logged, followed up the same day and tracked to an appointment.
Most clinics lose more leads after the tap than before it. Read why lead response time matters and see how WhatsApp Business for clinics can be set up to handle volume.
Consent and data
When someone sends a WhatsApp message or fills a form, you receive personal data. Under the DPDP Act, 2023, use it for the purpose they gave, which is their enquiry. If you want to send them health tips or reminders later, ask for consent clearly and let them opt out. Keep enquiry data secure and limit who in the clinic can access it.
A simple starting set-up
For a clinic new to Meta ads, a practical start is two ad sets on the same creative: one with "Send WhatsApp Message" and one with "Book Now" or "Call Now". Run both for two to four weeks with enough budget to get meaningful numbers. Keep the one with the lower cost per qualified lead and the higher booking rate. Then test new creative against the winning CTA, rather than changing everything at once.
If you want a team to set up and test this properly, our healthcare Meta ads service covers creative, CTA testing and lead follow-up.
