What are the benefits of a Google Business Profile for doctors?
A Google Business Profile puts a doctor or clinic on Google Maps and in local search results, so people nearby can find, call and get directions in one tap. It is free to set up, shows verified details such as address, timings and services, builds trust through reviews, gives basic data on calls and visits, and feeds the information Google and AI assistants use to answer local questions. For most Indian practices it is the single most useful free listing.
Ten benefits, in plain terms
| Benefit | What it means for your practice |
|---|---|
| Visibility on Google Maps | You appear when people search for your specialty near them |
| Direct calls | A call button on mobile turns a search into a phone enquiry instantly |
| Directions | People can navigate to your clinic without hunting for the address |
| Accurate timings | Regular and holiday hours reduce wasted trips and frustrated calls |
| Services listed | People see what you treat before they call |
| Reviews | Genuine feedback builds trust and is a local ranking factor |
| Photos | Real images of your clinic reduce uncertainty for first-time visitors |
| Posts | Free space to share timings, new services, doctors joining and health-awareness updates |
| Performance data | Counts of calls, direction requests and website clicks each month |
| Source for AI answers | Google's AI Overviews and other assistants draw on profile data for local questions |
It is often the first impression
Many people never reach your website. They search, see your listing with its rating and photos, and decide to call or move on. A profile with wrong timings, an unanswered phone number or no photos loses them at that moment. A complete, well-kept profile does the opposite. This is why Google profiles often drive more clinic leads than websites for local searches.
Doctor profile or clinic profile?
Google allows practitioner profiles for individual professionals who are directly reachable, as well as profiles for clinics and hospitals. The choice depends on your set-up:
- Solo practice: Google generally expects one profile. Use the doctor's name or the practice name, whichever appears on the signage.
- Multi-doctor clinic: one profile for the clinic, and optionally separate practitioner profiles for doctors who see patients there.
- Doctors at several locations: each clinic or hospital location has its own profile. Avoid duplicate profiles, which Google may merge or remove.

Reviews: a benefit that needs care
Reviews help people choose and support local ranking. They also need careful handling in healthcare. Ask every patient in the same neutral way, and never offer anything in return; Google's policies prohibit incentives and the NMC's 2026 guidelines bar inducements. Reply to every review, positive or negative, without confirming that the reviewer is your patient or mentioning any clinical details. Do not reuse reviews as testimonials in ads or posters, which the NMC's guidelines rule out. For tricky situations, see how doctors should respond to negative reviews.
How it fits NMC rules
The NMC's 6 October 2026 guidelines allow factual, verifiable information such as services, facilities, charges and doctor details, and limit individual doctors to genuinely educational content in their own name with qualifications and registration shown. A Google Business Profile with accurate details fits that model well. Keep posts factual, avoid superiority claims like "best gynaecologist in Lucknow", skip offers and discounts, and do not post patient photos or before-and-after images.
The AI search benefit
Google's AI Overviews and AI assistants increasingly answer questions like "Which clinics near me treat knee pain?" They draw on business profiles, reviews and websites. Accurate categories, services and consistent details make it easier for these systems to describe your practice correctly. Read GMB optimisation for AI Overview inclusion for the details.
What a profile cannot do on its own
A Google Business Profile is a strong starting point, but it has limits. It cannot fully explain a complex procedure, show detailed doctor credentials or answer every question someone has before surgery. That is the job of your website's service and doctor pages. It also cannot rank you in an area far from your clinic, because distance is a core local ranking factor. And it cannot fix weak front-desk handling: calls from the profile still need to be answered and followed up. Treat the profile as the front door, and make sure the rest of the house is ready.
What it costs and what it takes
The profile itself is free. The real cost is time: about an hour or two a month for a single clinic to update photos, post, reply to reviews and check for unwanted edits. Hospitals and chains with many doctors and locations usually need a system or a team. ICG's Angryturtle platform is built for managing profiles, posts and reviews across locations.
A quick checklist to get the benefits
- Claim and verify the profile; make sure only trusted staff have owner access.
- Pick the most specific primary category and add relevant secondary ones.
- Add every service, with factual descriptions.
- Upload real photos of the exterior, reception and consulting rooms.
- Keep hours current, including festival and holiday hours.
- Set up a neutral review request process and reply to every review.
- Check calls and direction requests monthly.
