Glossary · Healthcare Marketing & Compliance

NABH Marketing Compliance — what an accredited hospital can and cannot say in its marketing.

NABH Marketing Compliance covers the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers rules on using the NABH mark, quality claims, and outcome data in advertising. NABH-accredited hospitals must display the accreditation correctly, cannot use it to imply guaranteed outcomes, and must reconcile marketing claims with the audit evidence submitted for accreditation.

Mechanism

How it works.

NABH accreditation is a process-quality certification — it says the hospital's clinical, safety, and patient-experience processes have been audited against a defined standard, and the standard was met at the time of audit. Marketing tends to convert that into outcome language. A quality accreditation becomes a quality guarantee. A process audit becomes a proof of safe surgery. That translation is where compliance breaks. NABH's own regulations, ASCI's advertising code, and NMC's professional-conduct rules all converge on the same principle — a hospital can say what the accreditation says, and no more. The mechanism is essentially a reconciliation exercise between three artefacts — the accreditation certificate scope, the audit evidence submitted, and every public claim on the website or in advertising.

  1. Read the accreditation scope literally. Whole-hospital NABH, entry-level NABH, small-clinic NABH, and specialty accreditations each cover different perimeters.
  2. Use the mark in the approved form. The NABH logo lockup has size, colour, and placement rules; a decorated or modified mark is a breach.
  3. Attach the accreditation number. Every use of the mark should sit alongside the certificate number and the accredited entity name.
  4. Reconcile every claim to audit evidence. If the ad says "safest cardiac surgery in the city", audit evidence has to substantiate the claim; otherwise it is an ASCI-flaggable overstatement.
  5. Never imply outcome guarantee. Process quality is not clinical guarantee — the marketing language has to preserve that distinction.
  6. Update on surveillance events. If accreditation lapses or scope changes, marketing material must reflect the change before the next surveillance visit.
Compliance angle

Why it matters for
Indian healthcare.

NABH Marketing Compliance sits at the intersection of four regulatory regimes. NABH's own accreditation standards, which govern how the mark and the accreditation scope are represented. ASCI's advertising code, which governs unsubstantiated claims. NMC's Code of Ethics 2023, which governs how the treating physicians associated with the hospital can be portrayed. And DPDP Act 2023, which governs the patient-identifiable material a hospital publishes in marketing — testimonials, outcome stories, and before/after content. A hospital breaches any one of the four and the exposure carries into the others — an ASCI complaint on an outcome claim invites a parallel NABH observation on marketing conduct, and a DPDP complaint on a patient testimonial can escalate to a state-council investigation. The ICG NABH team, led by Adrito Basu with 15+ years in hospital accreditation, treats marketing collateral as an accreditation artefact — reconciled to audit evidence before publication, not audited retrospectively when a complaint lands. See NABH Consulting India for the full accreditation-plus-marketing workflow.

Inside the ICG stack

How ICG uses this.

ICG runs NABH marketing compliance as a joint workflow between the accreditation team (led by Adrito Basu) and the content team. Every NABH-accredited client's website is audited page-by-page against the accreditation scope, the mark usage rules, and the current ASCI code before any campaign launches. Website claims are cross-referenced with the audit evidence file, and any claim without evidence is either rewritten, removed, or supported with fresh evidence. Ads submitted to Meta or Google are pre-cleared by the same team before spend goes live. See NABH accreditation services and the operating layer at HealthPro 360 where the compliance evidence and marketing claim library sit in the same audit trail. Related term: DPDP Consent (Healthcare) and Entity SEO.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Can a NABH-accredited hospital use the NABH mark in ads?

Yes, but only in the form NABH prescribes and only for the entity that holds the accreditation. A group hospital cannot use the mark for a branch that has not been individually accredited. The mark cannot be resized, recoloured, or paired with claim language that implies NABH endorses the hospital beyond the scope of the actual accreditation. Standalone use of the mark in a way that suggests broader NABH approval than the certificate covers is a compliance breach.

What outcome claims can a NABH hospital actually make?

Only claims that reconcile with the audit evidence submitted for accreditation and with ASCI advertising guidelines. Statements like "NABH-accredited surgical safety" are permissible if the accreditation scope covered surgical safety. Statements like "guaranteed successful surgery because we are NABH-accredited" are not — NABH accreditation is a process-quality signal, not an outcome guarantee. The safest pattern is to cite process-level statements the audit evidence supports and stay away from outcome-guarantee language entirely.

How is NABH marketing compliance audited?

During the accreditation cycle, NABH assessors review a hospital's public communications — website, brochures, ads, social — as part of the standards on patient rights and information. Non-conformances on advertising claims typically show up as observations that must be closed before the next surveillance visit. State medical councils and NMC also receive marketing-related complaints, and any misuse of the NABH mark or claim that overstates the accreditation scope can trigger a parallel investigation. The ICG NABH team led by Adrito Basu handles reconciliation between marketing collateral and audit evidence.

Does DPDP consent also apply to NABH-accredited hospital marketing?

Yes — NABH accreditation does not exempt a hospital from DPDP Act 2023. Patient stories, outcome case studies, and before/after material published in ads or on the website need explicit, purpose-limited consent from every patient identified. NABH standards on patient rights also reinforce this — patient information cannot be used in marketing without documented consent, and the consent scope must match the intended use.
