Instagram Content Efficiency Score — the composite that tells you which post to spend money behind, not which post already spent it for you.

The Instagram Content Efficiency Score is a composite per-post metric that rewards engagement per unit of reach, with saves and shares weighted heavily and likes weighted lightly. It exists to surface "hidden gems" — posts that earned strong intent but did not get wide distribution — so agencies boost the posts worth money behind, rather than defaulting to the highest-reach post regardless of intent.

Mechanism

How it works.

The Content Efficiency Score is one number per post, computed from three inputs. First, an intent-weighted engagement composite — saves and shares carry the heaviest weight because they are the highest-intent actions the platform exposes, watch time on Reels carries a strong weight because it is what the Reels algorithm ranks on, profile visits carry a moderate weight because they signal follow-consideration, and likes carry a very light weight because they are the lowest-intent action. Second, the composite is divided by reach, so the score reflects intent per account reached rather than absolute volume. Third, the resulting number is normalised against the account's own trailing 30-day median, so the useful comparison is "how efficient is this post versus this account's own baseline" rather than "how efficient is this post versus some public benchmark." The result surfaces two things: posts that beat the baseline on efficiency but underperformed on reach (the hidden gems, worth paid boost), and posts that hit high reach but scored low on efficiency (the vanity posts, worth nothing behind them). Without the composite, agencies default to boosting the highest-reach post — which is almost always the wrong post.

  1. Pull the engagement inputs. Saves, shares, watch time (Reels), profile visits, likes — all from the Graph API per post.
  2. Weight by intent. Saves and shares heaviest, watch time strong, profile visits moderate, likes very light.
  3. Divide by reach. Score reflects intent per account, not absolute intent — so small-reach posts with strong per-account engagement are not penalised.
  4. Normalise against the account's own baseline. Trailing 30-day median. Public benchmarks are too categorical — each healthcare vertical behaves differently.
  5. Flag hidden gems. High efficiency + low absolute reach = paid-boost candidate. Surface these in the weekly report with a spend recommendation.
  6. Flag vanity posts. High reach + low efficiency = format that is entertaining but not converting. Keep for top-of-funnel; do not boost.
Boost decision

Why it matters for
healthcare paid social.

In Indian healthcare, the paid-boost decision on Instagram is where efficiency scores earn their keep. A healthcare account typically has a small monthly boost budget — ₹15,000-₹75,000, sometimes higher — and the decision of which three or four posts get behind that budget determines whether the boost drives enquiries or drives vanity reach. Agencies without an efficiency-score view default to the highest-reach post, because that post looks like it "already worked" — but the highest-reach post is almost always the one that entertained (a trending Reel, a personality post) rather than the one that captured intent (a clinical carousel, a myth-vs-fact Reel, an FAQ explainer). Boosting the entertained post produces more entertainment; boosting the intent post produces more enquiries. In the ICG-managed portfolio, the shift from reach-led to efficiency-led boost selection typically improves CPQL on the boosted set materially — because the boost budget is going behind the posts that were already earning saves and shares at high per-account rates, and paid distribution amplifies that intent-capture behaviour rather than diluting it.

Common mistakes

Where efficiency scoring gets misapplied.

  1. Weighting likes too heavily. A "total engagement per reach" score that treats likes like saves fails to surface the intent posts — it just re-ranks by engagement rate.
  2. Comparing against public benchmarks. A public benchmark averages across categories that behave nothing like healthcare — the account's own baseline is the only comparison that matters.
  3. Boosting on efficiency alone without a reach floor. A tiny post with three saves on 30 reach can score high on efficiency without being a real signal — a minimum reach threshold is needed to filter noise.
  4. Ignoring pillar context. A behind-the-scenes post is not supposed to score high on efficiency — do not judge it against clinical-education carousels on the same axis.
  5. Auto-boosting on efficiency without human review. The score surfaces candidates; the account manager still has to check the post is compliant, the offer is live, and the landing surface is ready.
  6. Reporting efficiency without explaining it. A composite score with no definition is a black box — the client needs to see the input weights on the report footer at least once per quarter.
Inside Prism Pulse

How ICG delivers this via Prism Pulse.

Prism Pulse renders the Content Efficiency Score on every post row alongside reach, saves, shares, and watch time — so the account manager sees the composite next to its inputs and can drill in when a score looks surprising. The hidden-gems section of the weekly report lists every post that cleared the efficiency threshold but did not clear the reach threshold, with a suggested paid-boost budget calibrated to the account's typical CPQL. The score is built on save rate and Reels watch time as the heaviest inputs, uses deduplicated reach as the denominator so the score reconciles with what the client can see in the app, and is normalised against the account's own trailing 30-day median rather than a category benchmark. The AI narrative in the weekly report names the top three efficiency movers and the top three hidden gems, so the account manager's boost conversation with the client starts from evidence rather than opinion.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Why do agencies need an efficiency score if they already report reach and engagement?

Because reach and engagement, reported separately, do not answer the boost question. Reach tells you which post got seen; engagement tells you which post got interaction; neither tells you which post earned interaction disproportionate to how many people saw it. The post worth spending money behind is the one with high intent per reached account, not the one that already got wide distribution. In the ICG-managed portfolio, boosting the highest-reach post typically produces incremental reach without incremental enquiries, while boosting the highest-efficiency post produces incremental enquiries at a materially lower CPQL. The efficiency score is the single number that surfaces the second option.

How is the Content Efficiency Score weighted?

The formula is proprietary to Prism Pulse but the working principle is public: saves and shares carry the heaviest weight because they are the highest-intent actions Instagram exposes, watch time on Reels carries a strong weight because it drives distribution, profile visits carry a moderate weight because they signal follow-consideration, and likes carry a very light weight because they are the lowest-intent action. The composite is then divided by reach, so a post with strong absolute save and share numbers on a small audience scores higher than a post with weak per-account engagement on a large audience. The score is normalised against the account's own trailing 30-day median rather than a public benchmark.

How does Prism Pulse surface hidden gems for paid boost?

Prism Pulse flags any post whose Content Efficiency Score is materially above the account's trailing 30-day median but whose absolute reach is below the median for the same window. That combination is the hidden-gem signature — high intent per account reached, but capped organic distribution. The weekly report includes a hidden-gems section listing these posts with the paid-boost recommendation and a suggested spend range calibrated to the account's typical CPQL. The account manager still decides — the score surfaces the candidates, the human makes the call.
