How should urgent care centers run Google Ads?

Urgent care centers should run Google Ads location by location: a tight radius around each center, ads that run only during open hours, keywords for urgent care and specific services, negatives for emergency and job searches, and clicks sent to the location page with online check-in. Measure calls and check-ins per center without sending patient details to Google, and move budget toward hours with spare capacity.

Guide for US practice owners · Published October 15, 2026

TL;DR
  • One campaign per location keeps budgets, radius targeting and reporting tied to each center's capacity.
  • Schedule ads to open hours, and stop serving well before closing so patients are not turned away.
  • Do not chase emergency searches: add negatives for symptoms and terms that belong in the ER.
  • Track calls and check-ins safely: no advertising pixels on intake forms, and no remarketing based on health conditions.
  • Every practice welcome — retainers from $499/mo, Goals-Driven engagements, Performance-Linked Payout Models available.

“They were able to get all my ideas and work with me over a period of three to four months and create this amazing website. It's super customized, very modern, and it incorporates all the elements that I had wanted — the patient portal, nice pictures, a very interactive website, patient reviews. I would highly recommend their company to anyone who wants to make an excellent website.”

Structure

How should urgent care Google Ads campaigns be structured?

Build one campaign per center, each with its own budget, location targeting and schedule. Inside each campaign, separate ad groups for core urgent care searches, specific services and occupational medicine if offered. A brand campaign protects your name. This structure lets you control spend by location and see which center produces visits.

Campaign or ad groupExample searchesLanding pageNotes
BrandYour center or group nameLocation page with check-inKeeps your name visible to patients already searching for you
Core urgent careurgent care near me, walk-in clinic open nowNearest location page with check-inOften the main budget line
Servicesx-ray near me, stitches, sports physicalService section on the location pageOnly for services that center offers
Seasonalflu shot, school physicalSeasonal service pageTurn on and off with the season
Occupational medicinepre-employment physical, workplace drug testingEmployer pageDifferent audience, separate budget and hours

Groups with many centers sometimes combine small locations to give campaigns enough data. If you do, still report by location using call and check-in tracking.

Targeting

How should urgent care ads be targeted by location and time?

Target a small radius around each center, set to people in or regularly in that area rather than people only interested in it. Urgent care patients rarely drive far, so wide targeting wastes budget. Schedule ads to run only when the center is open, and stop serving shortly before closing so late clicks do not arrive at a locked door.

Location settings

  • Use a radius or a set of ZIP codes that matches where your patients actually come from.
  • Exclude areas served better by another of your own centers, so locations do not compete.
  • Check the location report monthly and remove areas that generate clicks but no visits.

Schedule settings

  • Match the ad schedule to each center's hours, including holiday and special hours.
  • Lower bids during hours when the lobby is usually full, and raise them when it is quiet.
  • Agree a rule with operations for pausing ads when a center's wait becomes long.

Our page on wait times and online check-in explains how to tie ad pressure to capacity.

Keywords

Which keywords should urgent care centers bid on and avoid?

Bid on searches that show intent to visit an urgent care center today, plus searches for services each location offers. Avoid searches for emergencies, jobs, free care you do not provide, and services you lack. Negative keywords matter as much as the keywords you choose, because urgent care search terms overlap with many unrelated needs.

Usually worth bidding on

  • Urgent care and walk-in clinic searches, with and without "near me" or "open now".
  • Service searches the center can handle, such as X-ray, stitches, sprains and physicals.
  • Insurance searches, if your location page shows accepted plans clearly.

Common negatives

  • Emergency terms: severe symptoms that belong in the emergency room, plus "ER" and "emergency room" phrases. Sending these patients to urgent care is unsafe and wastes spend.
  • Job searches: "jobs", "careers", "hiring", "salary" and role titles.
  • Services you do not offer, such as specialist procedures or imaging you lack.
  • Information-only searches that rarely lead to a visit, reviewed from the search terms report.

Review the search terms report weekly at first, then at least monthly. Start with phrase and exact match for core urgent care terms, so you can see what patients actually type before loosening match types. Broad match can find useful new searches, but only once negatives are in place and conversions are tracked reliably by location. Without that, it tends to spend on loosely related queries.

Ads and pages

What should urgent care ads and landing pages say?

Ads should answer the patient's questions fast: are you open, how close are you, do you take my insurance, and can I check in online. Use location, call and sitelink assets. Send every click to the matching location page, with the check-in button, hours, address, services and insurance near the top. Avoid claims you cannot support.

Ad copy that works for urgent care

  • Hours and walk-in availability, such as open evenings and weekends, if true for that center.
  • Online check-in to save a place in line.
  • On-site services, such as X-ray or lab tests, where offered.
  • Insurance accepted and self-pay options.

Under the FTC Act, advertising must be truthful and not misleading. Avoid promises about wait times in ads, because ads cannot update as fast as your lobby changes. Google's healthcare and medicines policies also restrict some health content, so check the policy for each service you advertise. The landing page itself is covered in our guide to urgent care website must-haves.

Tracking

How do you track urgent care Google Ads conversions safely?

Count calls and completed online check-ins as conversions, by location, without sending patient details to Google. Keep advertising tags off intake and check-in pages that collect symptoms or contact details, and send only anonymous conversion counts. Do not build remarketing or customer lists from patient data or health interests, which Google's personalized advertising policies restrict.

The HHS Office for Civil Rights has published HHS guidance on online tracking technologies. For Google Ads, the practical risk is the conversion tag: if it fires on a check-in confirmation page, it can pass the page address and form context to Google. A 2024 federal ruling narrowed the guidance for unauthenticated public pages, but authenticated pages and patient portals remain covered, and intake flows are still a risk area. Sign a Business Associate Agreement with any vendor that receives call recordings or check-in data, and confirm your setup with counsel.

A safe conversion set for urgent care

  1. Calls from ads, using call assets or call tracking that does not record health details into ad platforms.
  2. Calls from the location page, counted by tracked numbers per center.
  3. Completed online check-ins, recorded on your own systems and passed back as anonymous counts.
  4. Directions requests from location assets, as a softer signal.
Budget and management

How much should urgent care spend on Google Ads, and who should manage it?

Budget depends on local competition, the number of centers and how much spare capacity each has. Start with core urgent care and brand searches for each location, measure cost per tracked call and check-in, then add services and seasons where the numbers work. Manage it weekly; urgent care campaigns drift fast when hours and seasons change.

A weekly management routine

  1. Check that each campaign's schedule matches next week's hours, including holidays.
  2. Read the search terms report and add negatives.
  3. Compare calls and check-ins by location with the previous week.
  4. Shift budget from centers with long waits to centers with spare capacity.
  5. Before each season, update ads and service groups, such as physicals in late summer or testing in respiratory season.

A short routine done every week beats a large overhaul done every quarter, because local demand and clinic capacity change quickly.

For sizing the overall budget, see how much an urgent care should spend on marketing. If you add Google Local Services Ads where they are offered for your category, keep them separate in reporting so you can compare results.

FAQ

Common questions

Do Google Ads work for urgent care centers?

Yes, when campaigns are built around each location. That means a tight radius, ads scheduled to open hours, keywords for urgent care and specific services, negatives for emergency and job searches, and clicks sent to a location page with online check-in. Track calls and check-ins per center to see real results.

Should urgent care centers bid on emergency room keywords?

Generally no. People searching for emergency rooms or severe symptoms may need emergency care, and sending them to urgent care can be unsafe and misleading. Those clicks also tend to waste budget. Add emergency terms as negative keywords, and explain clearly on your website which conditions belong in the ER.

Can urgent care centers use remarketing in Google Ads?

Use it with great care, if at all. Google's personalized advertising policies restrict targeting based on health conditions, and building audiences from patient data raises HIPAA concerns. Location, schedule and keyword targeting are safer alternatives, and they suit urgent care because patients search at the moment they need care. Confirm any audience setup with counsel.

Should each urgent care location have its own Google Ads campaign?

Usually yes. Separate campaigns let you set each center's budget, radius and schedule, and pause one location when its wait is long without affecting others. Reporting by location also shows which centers produce calls and check-ins. Very small locations can be combined, as long as tracking still reports by center.

What should an urgent care Google Ads landing page include?

Send clicks to the specific location page, not the homepage. Put the online check-in button, hours, address, map, phone number, services and accepted insurance near the top. Keep the page fast on phones. Explain which conditions need the emergency room, and avoid wait-time promises the clinic cannot keep.

A note on this guide: it explains marketing practice, not legal advice. Rules on privacy, advertising and insurance change and vary by state, so confirm anything compliance-related with your own counsel.
