How do you market a supplement brand in the US?

You market a supplement brand in the US by getting your claims and evidence right first, then building demand in a few channels you can measure. Pick one primary sales channel, one paid acquisition channel and one owned channel such as email. Judge every channel on contribution margin and repeat purchase, not on clicks or first orders alone.

Guide for US practice owners · Published October 15, 2026

TL;DR
  • Claims come before creative: every ad, label and landing page should draw from one approved claims sheet backed by evidence.
  • Start narrow: one hero product, one buyer, one sales channel and one paid channel, then expand only what pays back.
  • Repeat purchase decides profit: when acquisition costs are high, the first order may not cover them, and later orders make the customer profitable.
  • Owned audiences compound: email, SMS with documented consent, and content that search and AI engines can cite keep working after ad spend stops.
  • Every practice welcome — retainers from $499/mo, Goals-Driven engagements, Performance-Linked Payout Models available.

“They were able to get all my ideas and work with me over a period of three to four months and create this amazing website. It's super customized, very modern, and it incorporates all the elements that I had wanted — the patient portal, nice pictures, a very interactive website, patient reviews. I would highly recommend their company to anyone who wants to make an excellent website.”

The sequence

What should a supplement brand do first?

Do the work that every later channel depends on: define one buyer and one problem, write a claims sheet with the evidence behind each claim, and set the unit economics you need to hit. Only then choose channels. Brands that start with ads often end up rewriting their creative later, after a platform rejection or a legal review.

The four foundations

  1. Buyer and job: who buys, what they are trying to change, and what they already tried. "Adults who want better sleep" is too broad; "shift workers who want a non-habit-forming evening routine" gives creative something to say.
  2. Claims sheet: each permitted structure/function claim, the exact wording, the evidence file behind it and where it may appear. Our guide to FTC and FDA rules for supplement advertising explains what belongs on it.
  3. Unit economics: landed cost, fulfilment, payment fees and returns per order, so you know the most you can pay to acquire a customer.
  4. Proof assets: ingredient sourcing, testing documentation, founder story and real customer reviews collected honestly.
Channel mix

Which marketing channels work for supplement brands?

No single channel works for every supplement brand. The right mix depends on stage, price point and how the product is bought. A new brand needs one channel that creates demand and one place to capture it. An established brand adds channels that lower acquisition cost and lift repeat purchase.

Brand stageMain goalChannels to prioritizeWhat to measure
Pre-launchValidate the buyer and messageLanding page, waitlist email, small paid social tests, founder contentWaitlist sign-ups, message response, cost per sign-up
Launch (first months)First customers at a known costOne paid social channel, branded and category search ads, launch emailCost per first order, conversion rate, refund rate
Early growthRepeat purchase and reviewsPost-purchase email, subscription offer, review requests, creator partnerships with disclosuresSecond-order rate, subscription retention, review volume
ScaleLower blended acquisition costSEO and educational content, YouTube, marketplace presence, retail or practitioner channelsBlended acquisition cost, contribution margin by channel, share of revenue from returning buyers

Whether to lead with your own site or with Amazon is a separate decision with real trade-offs. We cover it in marketplace vs DTC strategy for supplement brands.

Messaging

How do you write supplement ads that convert and stay compliant?

Lead with the buyer's daily experience and the product's specific role, then support it with evidence, ingredients and honest expectations. Compliant copy can still be persuasive. It describes what the ingredient is studied to support, how to take it and who it suits, without implying it treats or prevents a disease.

  • Specific beats sweeping: "supports restful sleep as part of an evening routine" works better, and is safer, than "fixes insomnia".
  • Show the ingredient story: form, dose, sourcing and testing answer the skeptical buyer's real questions.
  • Set expectations: say how long a typical routine takes before people judge it. Unrealistic timelines raise refunds and complaints.
  • Keep testimonials typical: the FTC expects endorsements to reflect results people can generally expect, or to say clearly what the typical result is.

Ad platforms add their own limits on top of the law, such as rules on before-and-after images and on implying a viewer has a health condition. See Meta and Google ad policies for supplements before you brief creative.

What trust signals do supplement buyers look for before they buy?

Supplement buyers are skeptical, and they check. Before a first order they look for clear ingredient amounts, evidence of quality control, a real company behind the product and reviews that sound like real people. Each missing signal costs conversions in every channel, so fixing them usually lifts paid, organic and marketplace results at once.

  • A full label online: the Supplement Facts panel, every ingredient with its amount, and allergen information, readable on a phone.
  • Quality evidence: how the product is made under FDA current good manufacturing practice rules for supplements, and what testing you do on each batch.
  • A reachable company: a business address, a support email or phone line, and a named founder or team.
  • Honest reviews: collected from every buyer, never filtered, bought or written by staff. The FTC rule banning fake reviews and testimonials took effect in October 2024.
  • Plain guarantees: a refund policy written in one short paragraph, with no conditions hidden in the checkout.

Treat these as marketing assets, not legal fine print. Put them on product pages, in ad landing pages and in the first email a new subscriber receives.

Retention

How do supplement brands increase repeat purchases?

Repeat purchase grows when buyers take the product correctly, notice a difference and find reordering effortless. That means onboarding emails that explain the routine, a reminder timed to when the bottle runs out, an optional subscription with easy pause and cancel, and fast answers to questions about use and ingredients.

A simple post-purchase sequence

  1. Order confirmation: what to expect and when it ships.
  2. Delivery day: how and when to take it, and what not to combine without asking a clinician.
  3. Two weeks in: a check-in that invites questions and a review once they have used it.
  4. Before the supply runs out: a reorder reminder with a subscription option and clear terms.

Subscriptions must follow federal rules on online recurring charges: clear terms before billing, express informed consent and a simple way to stop the charges. Many states add their own automatic-renewal rules. Confirm your checkout and cancellation flow with counsel.

Discovery

How do supplement brands get found in search and AI answers?

Buyers research supplements by ingredient, by goal and by comparison before they buy. Brands that publish clear, evidence-led pages for those questions earn organic traffic and are more likely to be cited by Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity. The pages must be accurate, specific and consistent with your claims sheet.

  • Ingredient pages: what the ingredient is, forms and doses used in research, and who should check with a clinician first.
  • Goal pages: the routine a product fits into, written for an adult buyer, not as treatment advice.
  • Quality pages: manufacturing standards, testing approach and how to read your label.
  • Comparison pages: how your formula differs by form and dose, without naming or disparaging other brands.

The specifics of AI visibility are in how supplement brands show up in ChatGPT and AI search.

Measure and support

How should a supplement brand measure marketing and when should it get help?

Measure contribution margin per customer over time, not revenue per campaign. Track cost to acquire a first order by channel, second-order rate, subscription retention, refund rate and the share of revenue from returning buyers. A channel that looks expensive on first orders can be the most profitable once repeat purchase is counted.

A monthly scorecard

  • New customers and cost per new customer, by channel and in total.
  • Second-order rate for each monthly group of first-time buyers.
  • Subscription retention and the main reasons people cancel.
  • Refunds and complaints, read for messaging problems as well as product problems.
  • Contribution margin after marketing, the number that tells you whether growth is healthy.

Outside help makes sense when ad spend grows, when claims review slows launches, or when nobody in-house can connect channel data to repeat purchase. Before you brief any agency, hand over three documents: the claims sheet, your unit economics and this scorecard. They let you compare proposals on substance and give a new partner a working start. Ichelon Consulting US scopes supplement engagements around those same documents. See how we work on our supplement and D2C health brand marketing page, or book a call with the US team.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the first step in marketing a new supplement brand?

Define one specific buyer and write a claims sheet that lists every permitted claim, its exact wording and the evidence behind it. Set the most you can pay to acquire a customer from your unit economics. Channel choices, creative and landing pages all depend on these foundations, so they come before any ad spend.

Which advertising channel is best for a supplement brand?

It depends on the product, price point and stage. Many brands start with one paid social channel to create demand and search ads to capture people already looking. Judge each channel on contribution margin and repeat purchase over several months, not on cost per first order alone, before adding more channels.

Can a supplement brand say its product helps with a health condition?

Not as a disease claim. Under DSHEA, supplements may make structure/function claims, such as supporting normal function, with the required FDA disclaimer, but they may not claim to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent a disease. The FTC also requires competent and reliable scientific evidence for health claims. Confirm wording with counsel.

How do supplement brands improve repeat purchase?

By helping buyers use the product correctly and making reordering easy. A post-purchase email sequence explains the routine, invites questions and reviews, and sends a reorder reminder before the supply runs out. An optional subscription with clear terms and simple cancellation turns satisfied first-time buyers into steady customers.

How much should a supplement brand spend on marketing?

There is no fixed figure. Work backward from contribution margin and expected repeat purchase to find the most you can pay per new customer, then set test budgets that can reach a clear result within weeks. Increase spend only on channels that stay within that limit once refunds and repeat orders are counted.

A note on this guide: it explains marketing practice, not legal advice. Rules on privacy, advertising and insurance change and vary by state, so confirm anything compliance-related with your own counsel.
