TL;DR — word count and AIO citation
- Under 500 words: 4.1 percent AIO citation rate. Below the density threshold Google\'s citation model appears to require.
- 1,000-1,499 words: 13.9 percent. The efficient operating point for commercial and service pages.
- 1,500-2,499 words: 19.1 percent. The efficient operating point for informational and pillar pages.
- 4,000+ words: 24.0 percent. Only 4.9 pp higher than the 1,500-2,499 band. Marginal returns collapse above 2,500 words.
- Grid rank tracks the same curve. Median rank drops from 18.3 (barely appearing) at under 500 words to 4.8 (top-5) at 4,000+ words.
- Recommendation: 1,200-2,200 words for most pages. Split anything above 3,500 into two pillars if the material supports it.

Four numbers to anchor the study
Methodology
2,140 URLs from the ICG SIE dataset were classified into six word-count bands based on rendered word count (visible body text, excluding navigation, footer, and boilerplate). Bands were balanced on baseline organic authority (Domain Rating band) and page-intent classification (commercial service, informational pillar, glossary, procedure). Every URL was probed against its matched keyword set on a weekly AIO probe crawl; citation rate is the share of AIO-carrying result pages, for the matched keyword set, in which the URL appears as a listed citation.
Median grid rank. Every URL was scanned on a keyword-plus-city grid at study start and study end, and the median rank across the scan is reported per band. Median rank is capped at 20 (barely-appearing) for URLs that did not appear in the top 20 for any query in the matched set.
Content depth. Word count alone is a crude proxy for depth. Cross-checks against H2 count, FAQ block presence, image count, cited-source count and byline card presence confirm that pages in the same word-count band with higher depth scores on those secondary variables cite at meaningfully higher rates than pages in the same band with lower depth scores. Word count is a necessary condition, not a sufficient one.
Anonymisation. No client names, URL strings or page titles appear anywhere in this report. Every figure is aggregated at word-count band level.
Band-by-band results

The AIO citation curve versus word count
Sample citation rate by word-count band
Median grid rank tracks the same shape
The rank curve mirrors the citation curve. Median rank at <500 words is 18.3 — the page is barely visible on any query in the matched set. Median rank at 1,000-1,499 words is 8.7 — inside the top 10, sometimes inside the top 5. Median rank at 4,000+ words is 4.8 — reliably top-5. The biggest single jump in rank comes from moving from the 500-999 word band to the 1,000-1,499 word band, which suggests 1,000 words is the working minimum for any commercial-intent healthcare page in 2026.
Efficient word count by page type
| Page type | Target word count | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial service page | 1,000-1,500 | Enough for six-attribute FAQ, service detail, compliance framing, byline, CTA — without dilution |
| Informational pillar | 1,500-2,500 | Efficient zone · citation curve at peak · rank at ~5-6 median |
| Deep-pillar / evergreen | 2,500-3,500 | Marginal citation gain · consider whether two 1,800-word pillars would serve better |
| Definitional / glossary | 300-800 | Short-query intent · avoid padding · rely on schema depth for citation |
| Procedure / HowTo | 1,200-2,000 | Step body plus prep, cautions, expected outcomes · pair with HowTo schema |
| City × specialty programmatic | 900-1,400 | Enough differentiation to avoid duplicate risk · fits template pattern without padding |
What to act on this quarter
1 · Kill anything under 500 words that carries commercial intent
Either promote it to 1,000+ words with real depth, or fold it into a nearby pillar page. Below the floor, it will not cite.
2 · Push service pages to the 1,200 word band
Above 1,000, below 1,500. That is the efficient zone for commercial pages — enough depth without dilution of the buying intent.
3 · Split anything above 3,500 words that could split cleanly
The marginal citation return above 2,500 words is small. Two 1,800-word pillars almost always out-cite one 3,600-word pillar.
4 · Word count is a necessary condition, not sufficient
Depth beats length. A 1,500-word page with a six-attribute FAQ, cited sources and a byline card out-cites a 3,000-word page without those signals. Word count sets the ceiling; the other signals decide whether you reach it.
