The Meta Ad SLC Naming Convention 90% of Healthcare Accounts Get Wrong

Published 27 June 2026 · ICG Editorial · 7 min read
Inconsistent ad set naming costs the average healthcare brand ₹50K-2L per account per month in lost algorithm efficiency. The cost is invisible — it doesn't show up as a line item; it shows up as 18-22% higher CPL than it should be. The SLC framework is the fix. Most agencies don't know it. ICG built Meta Catalyst IQ partly to enforce it.

Why naming matters to Meta's algorithm

Meta's algorithm doesn't read your campaign goals — it reads patterns in ad metadata. When ad sets share consistent metadata patterns (location, format, content type), Meta finds correlations like "Mumbai + Carousel + Cost-anchored hook converts at 3x for IVF patients aged 32-38." Those correlations cross-pollinate across your campaigns.

When naming is inconsistent — "Mumbai Carousel cost ad" vs "MUM_carousel_cost" vs "mumbai_post_cost_v3" — Meta can't find the cross-campaign patterns. Each ad set is essentially a fresh learning experience for the algorithm. Result: slower optimisation, higher CPL, and your "best practices" never transfer between campaigns.

The SLC framework explained

SLC = Service / Location / Format / Content / Details. Every ad set name follows the same 5-dimension pattern:

{Service}_{Location}_{Format}_{Content}_{Details}

Example for an IVF clinic:

IVF_Mumbai_Carousel_CostAnchored_BAU
IVF_Mumbai_Reel_DoctorAuthority_BAU
IVF_Delhi_Video_PatientStory_FestivalQ4
IVF_NRI_Carousel_Bilingual_HighIntent

Each dimension defined

Service — the specialty / procedure category. Examples: IVF, Hair, Aesthetic, Dental, ENT.

Location — the geographic targeting. Examples: Mumbai, Delhi, NRI, Tier2.

Format — the ad creative format. Examples: Carousel, Video, Image, Reel, Story.

Content — the hook + content angle. Examples: CostAnchored, DoctorAuthority, PatientStory, BeforeAfter, ProcessExplainer.

Details — campaign-specific context. Examples: BAU (business as usual), FestivalQ4, NRIPush, EmergingMarket, TestVariant.

What changes when SLC is enforced

Once SLC is enforced across an account, three things change immediately:

  1. Meta's algorithm starts learning faster. Cross-campaign correlations become possible. CPL typically drops 10-15% in the first 30 days post-migration.
  2. Your team can diagnose by dimension. "How's Carousel performing across IVF specialty?" "How's Cost-Anchored performing in Tier-2?" These queries become 1-click in Meta Catalyst IQ Breakdown.
  3. Cross-account learning compounds. If you run multiple specialty funnels (e.g. a multi-specialty hospital), patterns transfer between specialties when naming is consistent.

The 5-day migration without losing learning phase

Most agencies refuse to rename ad sets because it kills the learning phase. The SLC migration we run preserves learning phase via a 5-day wave migration:

The naming conflict alertMeta Catalyst IQ flags naming conflicts in real time. Common conflicts: synonym mismatch (Mumbai vs MUM vs mum), abbreviation drift (Carousel vs Carus vs Crsl), and detail-field drift (BAU vs BusAsUsual vs Standard). Each conflict = lost cross-campaign learning.

SLC schemas per specialty (snapshots)

IVF schema

Service options: IVF, IVF_Premium, Surrogacy, GeneticTest. Location: city or NRI tier. Format: standard 5. Content: emotional state mirror, doctor authority, cost anchored, process explainer, success story. Details: cycle stage (Awareness/Decision), seasonality (Festival), NRI flag.

Aesthetic / cosmetic derm schema

Service options: HydraFacial, Filler, Botox, Laser, MicroNeedling, GFC. Location: city. Format: standard 5. Content: before-after (DPDP-managed), patient-state, doctor-authority, technique-differentiator. Details: pre-festival, summer-anti-tan, wedding-season, BAU.

Hospital multi-specialty schema

Service options: Cardiac, Ortho, Gynae, IVF, Oncology, Neuro, GI, Paeds, etc. (12-25 specialty funnels). Location: city + tier. Format: standard 5. Content: doctor-authority, cost-anchored, procedure-explainer, insurance-cashless. Details: emergency, planned, cashless-tieup, insurance-tieup.

What if your account has hundreds of ad sets in chaos?

Don't migrate all at once. The pattern:

  1. Identify your top 20% of ad sets by spend.
  2. Migrate those first to SLC. This captures 80% of the algorithm-learning impact.
  3. Kill the bottom 30% via rename audit (those that fail Quality Floor become candidates).
  4. Migrate the middle 50% over 6-8 weeks as new ad sets are created (every new ad set follows SLC; old ones renamed as they're rebuilt).

Within 8 weeks, the account is fully SLC-compliant without disruption.
