Does your Google rating affect how many patients call your clinic?
GBP Category-Level CTR Benchmarks India Healthcare 2026
328 healthcare Google Business Profiles · 80 categories · Jan–Aug 2026
Short answer: yes, but the effect flattens above 4.5 stars. Across 328 Indian healthcare Google Business Profiles, those rated above 4.5 turned a median 5.9% of profile views into phone calls, against 2.8% for profiles below 3.5 stars, roughly double. Moving from 4.8 to 5.0 added only about half a percentage point.
Owners often ask whether reviews "actually matter" for bookings. The best direct evidence a clinic can get is what happens on the Google profile itself: how many people who see it pick up the phone. ICG's GBP Category-Level CTR Benchmarks India Healthcare 2026 measured that across 328 profiles in 80 categories between January and August 2026.
Call rate by star rating
Median impression-to-call rate by Google rating band
n = 328 healthcare Google Business Profiles · 90-day rating at window end · Jan–Aug 2026
The steepest change is at the bottom. A profile below 3.5 stars is in a different position from one at 4.5: in this data it gets about half the calls from the same number of views. Above 4.5, each further step buys less. The difference between a 4.6 and a 4.9 profile is real but small, about half a point of call rate.
That matches what ICG's separate Google review study found among leading brands: they average 4.78 stars and cluster tightly between 4.7 and 4.9, so stars alone rarely separate them. See is 4.5 a good Google rating in India.
A worked example
Take a clinic whose Google profile is seen 3,000 times a month. At the median call rate for profiles below 3.5 stars (2.8%), that is about 84 calls. At the median for profiles above 4.5 stars (5.9%), it is about 177. The same visibility produces roughly twice the calls. Now take the same clinic moving from 4.6 to 4.9 stars: at 5.6% versus 6.1%, that is about 168 versus 183 calls, a gain of around 15. Both changes are worth having, but the first is where the money is, and it is reached by fixing complaints and asking every patient for a review, not by chasing perfect scores.
These are medians across many profiles, so your own numbers will differ, but the shape is the useful part: large gains below 4.5, small gains above it.
Category sets the baseline
Before comparing your call rate with anyone else's, check your category. Dental clinics converted 9.1% of profile views into calls; hospitals converted 1.8%. Fertility clinics had the highest website-click rate (9.4%), because patients research before calling. A hospital at 2% is doing normally; a dental clinic at 2% has a problem.
| Measure (median profile) | Rate |
|---|---|
| Profile views → calls | 4.8% |
| Profile views → direction requests | 3.6% |
| Profile views → website clicks | 6.1% |
| Dental clinics, views → calls | 9.1% |
| Hospitals, views → calls | 1.8% |
n = 328 profiles; dental clinic category 16 profiles, hospital 4 profiles (directional). Rolling 30-day medians.
What else moves calls
- Photos. Profiles with a full photo library (logo, cover, at least 20 interior and 10 team photos) had about 1.4 times the call rate of profiles missing a logo or cover photo. See common Google Business Profile mistakes.
- Competition. The same category converted better in cities with less crowded local results; Mumbai and Bengaluru sat above the portfolio median, Delhi and Gurugram below it.
- Stability. Category call rates moved by less than 0.4 points month to month, so a drop of a full point usually signals a real change: a rating fall, a removed photo, a category edit.
What this means for your clinic marketing
- Below 3.5: treat the rating as the priority. Find the recurring complaint, fix it, reply to every negative review within a day and ask every patient for a review.
- 3.5 to 4.5: steady review requests and replies, plus the photo and description basics.
- Above 4.5: stop chasing stars. Work on photos, review recency, replies and making sure every call is answered.
- Every month: record views, calls, directions and website clicks from your profile, and compare with your category, not with the portfolio average.
Calls only help if someone answers them. Our Google Business Profile management team tracks these rates per location, reputation management covers reviews and replies, and local SEO for doctors and dental clinic marketing explain how the profile fits the wider plan.
