How many Google reviews does a hospital need in India?
Multispeciality Hospitals on Google in India 2026: Review Study
35 leading multispeciality hospital brands · 7 metros · 1,750 recent reviews · October 2026
Short answer: there is no fixed number, but the leading hospitals set a high bar. The 35 most-reviewed multispeciality hospital profiles in seven Indian metros had a median of 10,874 Google reviews in October 2026 and were adding about 166 a month. A hospital competing with them for city-wide searches needs thousands of reviews and a steady monthly flow, not a one-off push.
That number comes from the multispeciality hospital Google review study, part of ICG's 2026 review research covering 245 healthcare brands. Most hospitals reading this are not one of the 35 leaders, and they do not need to match them. What they do need is a clear idea of which profiles they are compared with, and how far behind they are. Here is how to work that out.
Hospitals carry far more reviews than any other category

The leading multispeciality hospitals have about seven times the reviews of leading dental clinics and ten times those of leading orthopaedic hospitals. Eye hospitals are the only other category in the thousands, which fits their high outpatient volumes.
The pace matters as much as the total. The median leading hospital added roughly 166 reviews a month. At that rate, the 50 most recent reviews on its profile cover about nine days. A patient reading the top of that profile sees last week's experiences, not last year's. A hospital with 2,000 reviews but only a handful each month will show reviews that are months old, and that is visible.
How to set your own target
Because the leaders are an extreme, set a target from your own map results:
- List the searches that matter. "Hospital near me" in your locality, "multispeciality hospital in [city]" and two or three specialty searches you invest in, such as orthopaedics or cardiology.
- Note the three profiles Google shows for each. Write down their review counts and the date of their newest review.
- Aim for the middle of that group within 12 months, and for a monthly pace at least equal to theirs. Being far behind on total count but ahead on recent reviews is a reasonable position to be in.
For a 150-bed hospital in a tier-2 city the result might be a few hundred reviews. For a metro hospital competing with chain hospitals it will be in the thousands. Either way, the monthly flow is what you can control.
What hospital reviews say, and why it matters for volume
More reviews also means more negative reviews to answer. In the same study, 12.1% of the classified multispeciality hospital reviews were negative, the highest share of the seven specialties (the national figure was 7.8%). The most common complaints were staff manner (30.1% of negative reviews), waiting and scheduling (21.7%), booking and communication (12.0%) and billing or insurance (11.4%). We break those down in what patients complain about in hospital reviews.
Leading hospitals replied to 65.0% of their recent reviews on average. At 166 reviews a month that is a real workload, which is why reply duty needs a named owner rather than whoever has time.
What this means for your hospital marketing
- Build asking into discharge and OPD billing. A review link sent by WhatsApp or SMS after an OPD visit or at discharge reaches every patient without staff choosing who to ask. Google's policy forbids incentives, asking only satisfied patients, and "requesting that staff solicit a certain number of reviews", so avoid staff review targets.
- Treat each location separately. For chains, every hospital and clinic profile needs its own review flow; one strong flagship profile does not lift the others. Our multi-location GMB service is built for this.
- Watch recency, not just the total. Track new reviews per month per profile, and the age of the newest review, in the same dashboard as enquiries.
- Staff the replies. Negative reviews about billing and waiting need a fast, polite, non-clinical public reply and an offline follow-up. Our reputation management team writes reply templates that avoid patient details.
- Connect reviews to the rest of local search. Reviews sit alongside categories, photos, services and posts on the profile. See Google Business Profile management and hospital marketing in India.
