Doctor Media Mentions and PR — The Pitching Playbook

Published 23 August 2026 · ICG Editorial · 9 min read
Media mentions do two jobs for a doctor personal brand — they populate the "Media / Press" page on the doctor website with real citations, and they feed the entity signals that make a Google Knowledge Panel appear. This is the pitching playbook we use inside DoctorBrand: which desks matter, what a doctor-quotable story looks like, the pitch template, and how each pickup compounds.

Why media mentions matter more than clinic PR

Clinic PR — a new-branch announcement, an equipment launch, a milestone — reads as promotional and rarely carries entity authority. Doctor PR is different. A journalist quoting the doctor as an expert source on a public health topic is editorially independent by definition; the article is about the topic, not the doctor's practice. Google's Knowledge Graph treats these citations as high-authority entity signals, and Wikipedia editors treat them as WP:RS-compliant sources for WP:BIO notability.

Practically: one health-desk feature in a national daily is worth more for a doctor's brand than a dozen press-release pickups on syndicated wires. The DoctorBrand PR strategy is built entirely around earned-media placements.

The five story types that actually get picked up

Health journalists in India commission stories from a narrow set of frames. Learning to pitch inside these frames is 70% of the pickup outcome.

1. New policy or guideline

When the NMC issues a new guideline, the ART Act sees an amendment, the Health Ministry updates a national protocol, health desks need a clinical perspective by same-day. A pitch that offers the doctor as an on-record expert on the specific policy usually converts if timed within 24 hours of the announcement.

2. Seasonal or public-interest health topic

Winter respiratory illness in Delhi. Monsoon dengue. Summer heat-stroke protocols. IVF ahead of Mother's Day. These are calendar-predictable and desks plan them in advance. Pitching two weeks before the seasonal peak — with a data hook or a specific clinical angle — is the reliable path.

3. Research paper or clinical trial release

If the doctor has published in a peer-reviewed journal, the paper can be pitched to health desks with a plain-language summary. This works particularly well for oncology, cardiology, reproductive medicine, and public health topics. The pitch must be sent under the journal's embargo terms; pre-embargo pitches get the doctor added to the disallow-list.

4. Public health event or crisis response

During a health event — a disease outbreak, a hospital incident, a regulatory action — journalists need calm, clinically-accurate perspective quickly. Doctors who have built a media relationship in advance get the call; cold pitches during a crisis rarely land.

5. Human-interest angle on a condition

Rare disease awareness weeks, patient advocacy stories, breakthrough case studies (de-identified). These are feature-length rather than news-length, and they take longer to pitch and place — but they typically produce full doctor profiles rather than one-line quotes.

Compliance layer applies to PR tooEvery media quote must respect NMC Code + ASCI healthcare guidelines. No comparative superiority ("India's best fertility specialist"), no guaranteed outcomes, no promotion of specific pharmaceutical brands with undisclosed relationships. The NMC guidelines apply to public statements irrespective of surface.

The health-desk landscape in India

National-tier health desks that regularly cover doctors:

DoctorBrand maintains a live desk database with reporter names, beats, recent bylines and preferred pitch format. The database is updated monthly because health-desk reporters move often.

The pitch email template

Health-desk reporters receive 60-200 pitches per week. The template that consistently opens the door:

Subject: [Angle in 7-10 words] — [Doctor Name, specialty, city] available

Hi [Reporter first name],

Saw your [specific recent story] — [one-line specific comment on it].

On [today's news / this week's trend / the recent guideline]: [one-line clinical
angle that goes beyond the obvious take]. Happy to be on record with a data
point + quote by [deadline you name].

Dr [Name] is [one-line credential + practice location]. [One-line context on
why this specialty is relevant to the angle].

Reachable on this thread, WhatsApp [number] or a 10-minute call today between
[time window].

[Sender name, DoctorBrand at Ichelon Consulting]

What matters: (a) a specific, non-generic angle in the subject line; (b) evidence you have read the reporter's recent work; (c) a deadline you name so the reporter does not have to chase; (d) a reachable contact channel with time windows. Skip: PR-boilerplate praise, attached press kits, long doctor bios, "please find attached."

What to do after a pickup

  1. Add to the doctor website's Media page within 48 hours — the citation feeds SEO signal.
  2. Post the pickup to LinkedIn with a substantive commentary on the topic (not "look at me, I was quoted"). The LinkedIn playbook covers this format.
  3. Update the Wikidata entry if the citation supports a new claim.
  4. Thank the reporter with a substantive follow-up — a data point they might use in a future story, an introduction to another expert. This is what turns a one-off pickup into a recurring relationship.

How PR compounds into search authority

Each mention is a new entity signal Google's Knowledge Graph reads. When four to eight independent mentions have accumulated with consistent name-form and specialty, the Knowledge Panel typically appears (see Knowledge Panel guide). When twelve or more accumulate over 18 months, WP:BIO notability starts to be credible (see Wikipedia eligibility guide).

This is why the DoctorBrand approach treats PR as infrastructure, not as one-time publicity. Two well-placed pitches per month at Growth tier compound over 12 months into the citation base that makes the other surfaces settle.

Building a reporter relationship — the long game

The doctors who convert media pickups reliably are the ones with three to eight standing reporter relationships. Each relationship takes six to twelve months to build and, once built, generates 2-6 pickups per year without additional pitching effort. The mechanics of relationship-building:

  1. Comment before you pitch — before the first pitch, engage substantively with three of the reporter's recent stories via Twitter, LinkedIn or email. Something specific — a data point they missed, a related angle worth exploring next time.
  2. The first pitch should be a gift, not an ask — offer a data point or clinical perspective the reporter can use even without quoting you. The reporter remembers usefulness.
  3. Meet at conferences and events — health journalism has small circles. Public health conferences, medical association events, health-tech launches all have reporters attending. A five-minute in-person conversation converts far better than any email.
  4. Send the reporter reading, not press releases — twice a year, share an interesting article or paper you have read with a one-line note on why it matters. This is what turns you from "PR contact" to "expert I read".

The DoctorBrand PR ops layer maintains the relationship rhythm — quarterly check-ins scheduled by the ops team, event calendars flagged in advance, useful-content shares curated for the doctor to send.

Broadcast, podcast and newsletter appearances

Beyond print and digital publications, three formats are worth prioritising in 2026:

What PR cannot do

PR cannot manufacture patient consults directly. A national feature drives some website traffic in the 48 hours after publication and then fades — that traffic rarely converts to bookings on the same day. The value of PR is compounding authority: better Knowledge Panel, higher LinkedIn conversion, higher YouTube trust signal, Wikipedia eligibility. The doctor who expects a full waiting room in the week after a media pickup is calibrated wrongly.
