How to choose Android handsets for call recording in a clinic calling team
If your clinic wants call recordings on every lead, the phones your telecallers carry matter more than the software. That surprises many clinic owners, because plenty of apps claim to record calls on any phone.
This guide explains why that claim does not hold on modern Android, what to check before you buy handsets for a calling team, and how to test a model properly before ordering in bulk. It is written for AtomCRM, but the constraint applies to every call-recording app.
- Since Android 10, ordinary apps cannot capture call audio; only the phone's default dialer can.
- Reliable recording therefore depends on the handset's built-in call recorder, which apps like AtomCRM collect from.
- Samsung, Xiaomi, Realme, Vivo and OnePlus ship built-in call recorders, but always test the exact model and software version.
- Checklist: Android 10 or newer, recorder on for all calls, Google Play services, a SIM that allows call forwarding, reasonable storage.
- Pilot two or three handsets before buying for the whole team.
Why most call-recording apps do not work on modern Android
Since Android 10, the operating system blocks access to call audio for every app that is not the phone's default dialer. Google Play also bans the accessibility-service workaround that apps used to rely on. So an app that claims to record calls on a stock Android phone is either using a loophole that the next update will close, or is recording only your side of the conversation through the microphone, or is not doing what it says.
The reliable route is the one many handset makers already provide: a built-in automatic call recorder inside their own dialer. When it is switched on, the phone writes an audio file after each call. The AtomCRM calling app does not record anything itself. It finds that file, matches it to the right call by end time and duration, and uploads it to the lead.
That makes handset choice a procurement decision, not a software one.
What a telecaller phone needs
| Requirement | Why it matters | If it is missing |
|---|---|---|
| Android 10 or newer | Minimum for the calling app | The app will not install |
| Built-in call recorder, set to record all calls | The source of every recording | Everything works except audio |
| Google Play services | Push notifications for escalations | The app still works and checks in instead |
| A SIM that allows call forwarding | Live forwarding across handsets | Escalation still works; live forwarding does not |
| Any data connection, 3G upward | Delivering calls and recordings | Work is queued and sent when signal returns |
| Reasonable free storage | Recordings sit on the phone until uploaded | Recorder may stop writing when storage is full |
How to check a phone before you buy it in bulk
Samsung, Xiaomi, Realme, Vivo and OnePlus all ship phones with a built-in call recorder. But availability can differ between models, software versions and regions, and some phones come with a different default dialer. So check the exact model you plan to buy, running the software version it will ship with.
- Open the phone's own dialer settings. Look for a call recording option and whether it can record all calls automatically, including calls from numbers not saved in contacts.
- Make three real test calls. One outgoing to an unsaved number, one incoming from an unsaved number, one short call under ten seconds.
- Find the files. Confirm that a recording was written for each call, and note that unsaved numbers usually produce a generic file name with no phone number in it.
- Install the calling app and pair the phone. Check that each test call shows in the Calls tab with a recording attached.
Step 3 is why AtomCRM never matches recordings by file name. The name usually carries no number for the unsaved contacts a telecaller rings all day, so matching is done by call time and duration instead.
The permissions a calling app should ask for, and why
Before you hand phones to your team, know what the app will ask for. The AtomCRM calling app asks for each permission when it first makes sense, after sign-in, rather than in a wall of pop-ups at launch.
| Permission | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Call log | Reading calls made or taken, including ones dialled outside the app |
| Phone state | Noticing when a call starts, rings and ends, for ring time and prompt missed-call reports |
| Place calls | Tap-to-dial, and sending forwarding codes to the carrier |
| Read audio | Reading the recording the handset wrote; the app writes no audio of its own |
| Notifications | Telling a telecaller a patient is waiting for a call-back |
| Background service | Catching a missed call while the app is closed |
| Install packages | Applying the app's own updates, since it is not distributed through a store |
If a telecaller later revokes a permission in Settings, the affected screen says so instead of quietly showing nothing.
Company phones or telecallers' own phones?
Both work. Company phones give you control: one model, one software version, recorder settings checked once, and a clean hand-over when someone leaves. Personal phones cost nothing upfront but vary in model, and the recorder is a setting the owner controls.
If you use personal phones, tell your team plainly what the app does and does not do. It uploads nothing from before it was installed, refuses anything older than twelve hours, stops uploading entirely when they sign out, and records nothing itself. Those rules exist so a personal phone can be used for work without the clinic seeing the person's private calls.
What AtomCRM costs
₹50,000/- one-time setup
+ ₹799/- per telecaller per month
Monthly pricing scales with the size of your calling team, not with call minutes, because calls run on your own SIM plans. Setup covers configuring stages, lead sources, forwarding and escalation ladders, and the handset pilot.
AtomCRM is live at 80+ healthcare centres in India, including 15+ IVF centres, 20+ aesthetic centres and 10+ eye centres.
Handsets for call recording: common questions
Which Android phones record calls automatically?
Samsung, Xiaomi, Realme, Vivo and OnePlus ship phones with a built-in call recorder. Availability can vary by model, software version and region, so test the exact model before buying in bulk.
Can an app record calls on any Android phone?
Not reliably. Since Android 10 only the default dialer can access call audio, and Google Play bans the old accessibility workaround. Apps like AtomCRM collect the recording the phone's own recorder writes instead.
Do iPhones work for clinic call recording?
The AtomCRM calling app runs on Android only, because it reads the phone's call log and recording folder.
What happens on a phone without a built-in recorder?
Everything else in the calling app works: leads, dialling, the after-call form, call capture, follow-ups and missed-call escalation. There is simply no audio.
Should we buy phones before the pilot?
No. Pilot on two or three handsets of the model you intend to buy, confirm recordings match, and then order for the team.
