FAQPage Schema - Definition, Formula, and Why It Matters for Healthcare Marketers
FAQPage Schema is a JSON-LD structured-data block that marks a page's question-and-answer section for search engines. When Google trusts the block it can render an accordion of Q&As directly in the SERP under the page result, roughly doubling SERP real estate.
How it works.
The block declares FAQPage as the schema type and lists an array of Question entities, each with a name (the question) and an acceptedAnswer entity carrying the text. Google validates the JSON, matches every Q and A to visible content on the page and — since 2023 — restricts the SERP accordion enhancement mostly to well-known authoritative sites and Government/Health domains. For sites that do not earn the SERP accordion, the block still feeds AI Overviews and Google's Knowledge Graph, which is now the higher-value use.
Why it matters for healthcare businesses.
For a healthcare buyer the value has shifted. Two years ago FAQPage schema was mainly for the SERP accordion. Today the same schema is a primary input into AI Overviews and voice assistants. A hospital page with 8 FAQs marked up correctly is 3-5x more likely to be cited in an AIO for a related query than a page with the same content in prose. It is now table stakes for any page targeting a health-information query.
Example - IVF centre.
An IVF centre in Chennai marked up 12 FAQs on its 'IVF cost in Chennai' page. The SERP accordion never appeared. But Google Search Console showed 34 impressions on AI Overviews inside 60 days, and Google Analytics 4 showed 8 organic sessions where the exact FAQ answer was the referrer text. The page also started ranking for 6 long-tail questions it never targeted, all pulled from the FAQPage block.
Common mistakes.
- FAQs that repeat body copy. Google flags redundancy. Each FAQ answer must add something the body does not already say.
- Answers longer than 3 short paragraphs. AIO and accordion truncate long answers. Keep each answer 40-90 words.
- Markup on lead-gen or advertorial pages. Google restricts FAQPage schema to informational content. Sales pages are ineligible and can lose all schema.
- Same FAQ on 20 URLs. Duplicate FAQs across a site dilute the signal. Vary questions or consolidate to one canonical FAQ hub.
Frequently asked questions.
Does FAQPage still get the SERP accordion?
Rarely, and only for well-known authoritative or government/health sites. For most sites the value is now AI Overview citation and Knowledge Graph feeding.
How many FAQs per page?
4-8 works. Under 3 does not earn the enhancement. Over 10 dilutes the answer quality.
Can I put FAQPage schema on a service page?
Only if the FAQ section is genuinely informational — no pricing pushes, no CTAs inside the answer. Otherwise Google will refuse the block.
What is the minimum answer length?
No official minimum. 40 words is a safe floor. Under 20 words often gets ignored by AIO because there is no context.
